TRINITY COUNTY, California (Isabelle Zehnder reporting) — A major search effort underway since Friday ended Saturday afternoon when the body of 2-year-old Sophie Parker Pedreros was found in the Trinity River north of Coffee Break; her mother is being charged with murder.
Claudia Parker Pedreros, 30, of McKinleyville was booked into the Trinity County Jail Saturday.
Her father-in-law was the last person to see Claudia in the living room of her home on Yahama Court in McKinleyville at about 2 a.m. Friday. When he got up again Claudia wasn’t home. He called to report her and her daughter missing.
Claudia’s dog, cell phone, and driver’s license were found in Willow Creek later that morning.
At around 9 a.m. Friday Claudia was found walking naked along Highway 3 near Coffee Creek Road and Trinity Lake, Sophia was nowhere to be found. Claudia told deputies she didn’t remember how she got there or that she even had a little girl.
It wasn’t until she was allowed to speak with her husband that she started to remember things.
Deputies initially suspected she had mental issues or was under the influence of a narcotic, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.
Trinity County deputies found Claudia’s car parked at the Trinity River Campground Friday. Sophia was not in the vehicle or anywhere nearby.
A massive search effort began Friday for the toddler and continued Saturday. A California Highway Patrol helicopter crew from Redding searched from the air, and search dogs were sent in Friday afternoon from Shasta County.
Items from Claudia’s vehicle were found strewn along a 10-mile stretch of Highway 3.
Humboldt County deputies searched all roads along Highway 299 between Willow Creek and Trinity County. Trinity County deputies searched the area of Highway 3.
The Shasta County and Siskiyou County Sheriff’s offices helped in the search along Highway 299 from Willow Creek to Weaverville and up Highway 3 to Coffee Break area, Trinity County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Lynn Ward said.
The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office had requested assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice.
Law enforcement is asking anyone who saw Pedreros or her 2008 silver Kia sedan with California license plate number 6GKR186 Friday morning along Highway 299 or Highway 3, or who has any information about the incident, to call the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office at 530-623-2611.
