Mega superstar and music icon, Michael Jackson left us one year ago today. Many will find their own way to honor his memory. There will be television specials, concerts, gatherings and much more. Some will simply taking time to recount personal memories and that is what I would like to do.
My first memories of Michael Jackson being special in my life was when I was 9 years old and Jackson was the lead singer for the Jackson 5 , a group formed by his father with Michael Jackson and his brothers. I remember my sister and I telling friends in our all white private school that they were our cousins. We would play their music in the background and say they couldn’t come to the phone because they were busy recording. And like every adoring young fan of the Jackson 5, we all picked who we were in love with and wanted to marry. Oprah Winfrey recently had the oldest brother, Jackie Jackson on her show as the member of the group she loved. I just loved the group but I loved Michael Jackson’s dance styles. As far as marrying goes, I fell in love with Randy after he joined the group (sorry Michael).
Once Michael Jackson decided on a solo career and I grew past my teen years into college, I learned to appreciate Jackson for his pure God-given talent. With his moonwalk, spin moves, awesome singing range and his incredible ability to deliver a song, Jackson made us fall in love with pure, unadulterated great music. He did not just entertain, he expressed his soul. I believe growing up in front of millions of people and with a dictator for a father caused Jackson to suppress his emotions and and keep him in his own mental prison. Being on stage gave him the opportunity to freely express his heart. It’s why he gave it all he had. He had a lot of love to give and no where to give it. The stage was his platform for love – to give and receive it. And whether we realize it or not, that is why we are so in love with him. It is also why he will be truly missed. Not for his fame. We will miss Michael Jackson for his love of music, dance and us!
Miss and love you Michael.
