A wise person once said, “Pizza is a lot like sex. When it’s good, it’s really good. When it’s bad, it’s still pretty good.” While original pizza consisted of simple, healthy ingredients like flatbread, tomatoes and a variety of vegetables, modern pizza it typically anything but healthy. From Chicago style deep-dish to deep-fried, a single serving of pizza can contain more than 2,000 calories. There are many tricks to making this food healthy, but the most difficult one is to simply make the pizza both healthy and delicious.
When eating food, there seems to typically be a distinction between healthy and tasty food. It seems like the general rule is “if it’s healthy, it won’t taste good.” Tasty food for most of us includes some that are considered downright terrible for your health including cheeseburgers, fries and pizza. However, Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Joint destroys the stereotype of “tasty but unhealthy pizza” and replaces it with “delicious and healthy pizza.”
When you walk into Maddio’s, it becomes abundantly clear that this is not just a typical place to order another greasy slice of pizza. Maddio’s lets you customize your pizza to fit whatever diet you want. From the three types of available crusts including whole wheat and a gluten-free option, to the sauces where marinara is just one of seven choices to the seven cheese choices including goat cheese, feta and vegetarian cheese, it is clear this is a pizza that you will love.
While the crust and sauce options are great, Maddio’s really shines in the toppings department. There are more than 20 vegetables available and more than 10 meat choices. This is where the eating healthy part really comes into play. The meat toppings are not the diet pitfall choices like most pizza parlors. The choices to eat well are plentiful. Free-range chicken and Angus steak are two of the healthy ingredients that are more than good for you, they taste wonderful.
My first time at Maddio’s I ordered the seven inch whole wheat pizza with pesto sauce and mozzarella cheese. My toppings were free-range chicken, Angus steak and portabella mushrooms. Even though my visit to Maddio’s was on a Friday evening during a rush, my pizza was at my table within ten minutes. The pizza was cooked perfectly, none of the crust was burned, the cheese perfectly melted and the toppings were cooked without losing any of their delicious moisture. On taste alone, this pizza ranks in my top five pizzas of all time. With its healthy options, that puts Maddio’s as my clear number one.
So for everyone in the mood for a great slice of pizza, without the guilty feelings afterwords, Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Joint is the place to go.
