The lure coursing field at Pawsitively Fun Training Center in Freeville hosts a practice and introduction to lure coursing workshop this Sunday, June 26, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. According to workshop presenter Donna DeVoist of Wylde Pups, the fields are dry and as long as it isn’t storming, dogs will be able to course. Freeville is about an hour southwest of Syracuse, near Ithaca.
Mother Nature hasn’t been kind to area lure coursers, who cannot run in rain, thunderstorms, or on rain-soaked and flooded fields. But as the area has dried out, DeVoist has been able to schedule coursing. In addition to this Sunday’s workshop, DeVoist has scheduled additional workshops at Pawsitively Fun on Sunday, July 17 and Sunday, July 31, also from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Each coursing run is $5 per dog. DeVoist accepts online signups and notifies people who register in advance in the event that coursing must be cancelled. Readers interested in coursing can also email DeVoist.
This year, DeVoist offers three of her own Wylde Pups Lure Coursing titles for dogs participating in the workshops.
- Wylde Courser Enthusiast (WCE) – for dogs who run the course three times with enthusiasm.
- Wylde Courser Maniac (WCM) – for dogs who run the course 10 times and can’t be distracted by anything.
- Wylde Courser Extreme (WCX) – for dogs who run the course 20 times and are tireless in their pursuit of that little plastic bag.
DeVoist doesn’t require any special skills or training to start a dog in lure coursing, but cautions that dogs must be in good physical condition for this demanding sport. Fun and safe coursing are both emphasized at DeVoist’s workshops. Dogs must pass a physical inspection before they can run, and must be warmed up before coursing and cooled down after they run.
All dogs are hand released to the course. Inexperienced dogs run one at a time. DeVoist prefers that all dogs be crated, but handlers who can hold their dogs securely may wait on leash when not running. Dogs can attend the workshop on flat buckle collars, martingale collars, or body harnesses, and short leashes are recommended.
Pawsitively Fun Training Center is located at 930 West Dryden Rd., Freeville, NY. Readers should confirm their coursing date and time with DeVoist via email or registration for the workshop at the online sign-up link on the Wylde Pups website.
