“Law of the Few”, a local record pool, is coming back to the 12 Lounge (1123 H Street, N.E.) on Thursday, June 2, 2011. This event is presented by Harmony Muzik and will be hosted by Dre “All Day In The Paint”. The doors open at 6:00 pm and don’t close until 1:00 am. Be sure to arrive on time for the New Music Listening Session from 6-8 pm.
The first “Law of the Few” record pool was held in December, and was extremely successful.
A record pool is a regional distribution arrangement that gives DJs access to new music at minimal (or no) cost. In return the record companies get feedback and exposure for their artists. The concept of the record pool was originated by legendary New York City DJ David Mancuso during the mid 1970’s.
Among the prominent DJs scheduled to appear at “Law of the Few” are: Ykcor, J-$crilla, Celo, Alizay, Quiksilva, Jealousy, Booman, Hi Def, RBI, and Miss Gemz. Also in attendance will be the talented producers: Bink, Benny Rome, Mark Henry, Basshedz, and Grussle.
According to Harmony, this is going to be a very informative and productive affair.
“The main problem with some other record pools is they are so exclusive that they offer little opportunity for artists and DJs to network,” she says. “We’re going to have it set up so artists can walk up to their favorite DJ or producer, introduce themselves and ask questions – it will benefit everyone.”
“Law of the Few” will feature performances from an all star line-up of artists including: Laelo Hood, SmCity, Karron Johnson, Rugged Soulz, Alison Carney, Levi Stephens, Stalley, Adrienne Mack-Davis (Brooklyn), Clear Soul Forces (Detroit) and Harmony Muzik herself.
There will also be a “Law of the Few II (East Coast Edition)” mixtape featuring most of the previously mentioned artists, along with Da Phuture, Mullyman, Phil Ade, Raheem DeVaughn, Uptown XO, Gerreddi, Rated R, and Jono.
Harmony believes this event will be another step towards unifying the local music industry.
“Every established label in the area is already on board. The press passes are going fast, and we’ve already received over 100 submissions for the New Music Listening Session. I’m doing my best, with the help of DJ Ykcor, J-$crilla, and Dre “All Day In The Paint”, to present the best music the DMV has to offer.”
New to the event will be a rap cipha. The 6 emcees selected (Kane Mayfield, Whitefolkz, Tese Fever, Pro’Verb, and Flex Matthews) are known for their lyricism, freestyle ability, and stage presence. They will each spit 16 bars live on camera – no pauses, no breaks, and no do-overs! Each emcee will be using a beat from nationally known producer Bink (recognized for his work with Kanye West).
