Pens, paper, crayons, ruler, 3 ring binder, notebook, and backpack.. New pants, new shirts. New socks, new shoes. Haircut, new hair style. A fresh look to begin a fresh year of school. All of this is standard, ordinary, and stressful for the kids. The first day of school establishes the image that they will demonstrate for the rest of the year. Who they are is set in stone from Day 1. (Or at least they think so.)
The first day of school is equally or more stressful for the parents who do the ripping and running for the best deals and bargains for the laundry list of supplies necessary for their child to attend to school.
Kingdom in the Valley Christian Church hosts an Annual Backpack Outreach in which they donate backpacks to the local community. This is a part of their community outreach. They “have a heart to step out of our world and into the world of others by getting involved and making a difference.”
This outreach helps families reduce the stress of purchasing a backpack for their children so that they can focus on another area of their lives. While the cost of a back is mundane and miniscule to some, to others that equates to a meal or gas in their car so that they can drive to work for the week. The cost of a backpack to some is so insignificant that they purchase multiple backpacks throughout the year. Others, however, may never have a backpack or stretch one sub-par backpack throughout the year.
This event, hosted by KVCC. will be on August 6, 2011, at Sunnyslope Elementary School, 245 E. Mountainview Rd., Phoenix, AZ, from 9:00 am til noon. In addition to the backpacks, free haircuts and more will be available.
