Killzone 3. We’ve been waiting for a while now for this PS3 exclusive. Was it worth the wait? In a word, YES!.
First of all, the game is gorgeous. The graphics are very well done, are colorful and lively. There is a ton of action on the screen and there is almost no slowdown at all. The character models are well done and are properly animated.
Second, sound. The game is obviously made for home theater. Bullets zip past you, explosions take place all around you. Your teammates are yelling from every direction. The music helps set the mood perfectly. Everything is well done.
The single player campaign mode is really fun. The story is still somewhat scant, but is much better than in the previous games. Both the opponent and friendly AI’s are smart and you will see few “dummy” characters. It is very intense and has a Call of Duty feel to it. I say that in a good way. You constantly feel like you’re under fire and actually feel some anxiety to complete the mission. The campaign mode pulls you into the game and is a very enjoyable experience.
The heart of Killzone 3 though is in it’s multi-player. This is where the real fun is. Not much has changed from Killzone 2, and that’s a double edged sword. On one hand, it’s good because multi-player Killzone 2 was incredibly fun. On the other hand, it feels like Killzone 2 with different maps. In either case, muti-player is great and you’ll find yourself saying “Just one more game”.
So what’s not to like? Well, as great of a game that Killzone 3 is, it suffers from the same problem that every FPS faces on the PS3. Horrible controllers. Ok, before you all go crazy on me, let me say that the PS3 controller is awsome if you play Madden, or NHL, or just about every other sports game out there. But for an FPS, the PS3 controller is lousy. Always has been, always will be. That’s just how it goes.
In order to get around this, (and to boost hardware sales), Sony made Killzone 3 Playstation Move compatable. While it would appear that using the Move control scheme would make sense and would make one think that using the controller(s) would create a more immersive experience, that’s just not the case. Yes, it’s fun, but after 15 minutes of game time, I’m ready for a nap.
Overall, Killzone 3 is a great game. Its fun and addictive on-line gameplay along with amazing sound and graphics, and a really immersive single player mode makes it a game well worth buying. Pick it up and give it a shot, if you’re a FPS fan, you’re really going to love this game.
