They banned the cover of Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album but Kanye counters by launching a line of risque scarves inspired by the same album!
Kanye West, 33, has commissioned his line of “artistic” scarves in collaboration with French design group M/M (Paris).
This will be a limited-edition of only five designs, going on sale from Monday, based on artist George Condo’s paintings made for the cover of Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album.
Condo’s original work for the album cover featuring a nude portrait of the Kanye with a caucasian looking female beast on top of him, was allegedly banned from American stores last autumn for being too controversial.
Kanye chose to print the image in silk, along with four other designs based on his “musical fantasies” entitled Power, Phoenix, Face, Priest and Ballerina — each set in a frame of gold lettering created by the M/M (Paris) team.
But only 100 of each design will be printed, to be sold exclusively through M/M (Paris)’s website and at French boutique Colette for $364 (250€).
The racy Phoenix design was debuted via Twitter a month before the album was released, with Kanye saying “Yoooo they banned my album cover!!!!! Banned in the USA!!! They don’t want me chilling on the couch with my phoenix!”
Wal-Mart however, denied banning the image, and was forced to release a statement to that effect, saying, “we’re excited about Kanye West’s new album and we look forward to carrying it in our stores on 22 November. We did not reject the cover artwork and it was not presented to us.” The image looks like a caucasian woman with pig ears and ferocious teeth from what is visible on the scarf.
Condo, the Phoenix’s artist said that the artwork was a “publicity stunt,” telling the New Yorker that Kanye had been puposely looking for “something that will be banned.”
M/M (Paris) has worked with many celebrities including musicians Benjamin Biolay, Björk, Etienne Daho and Madonna.
This collaboration between the musician and M/M (Paris) is the latest fashion project for Kanye, who has also created a line of sneakers for Louis Vuitton in 2009 and the Air Yeezy sports shoe with Nike. West also has a clothing line called Pastelle by Kanye West.
