Some good news and some bad news for Keith Olbermann, whose new show Countdown with Keith Olbermann debuted on Current TV this past week. The good news is that his early ratings aren’t abysmal. (A blog titled contactmusic.com claims that 179,000 viewers tuned in on Wednesday, about three quarters the size of his typical audience share at MSNBC and about one fourth the size of his sworn enemy FOX News Channel.) The bad news is that Olbermann remains as clueless and hostile as he was back before his old network gave him the boot last year.
The same can be said for his guest on Thursday, political heavyweight Janeane Garofalo, with the added adjective pathetic. How else to describe her complaint that
I do not enjoy when people don’t like me. I would prefer to be well liked in any and all situations. And I also feel it’s quite unjust to be punished for calling racism ‘racism.’
Garofalo was referring to her 2009 remarks in which she declared that the Tea Party was “a bunch of teabagging rednecks,” a view she still holds despite having no more evidence to support the allegation now than she did back then.
In fact, she doubled down on her original accusation, explaining:
If it was a white Democrat, you couldn’t get so many Tea Party people so upset whatever it is they’re upset about—showing up armed to town hall meetings. By the way, if a black person showed up armed at a town hall meetingwhere a white politician was speaking, it would be on lockdown martial law and we’d never hear the end of it.
Here, Garofalo goes from the merely outrageous to the absurdly misinformed—and no one should know it better than Keith Olbermann. His former network devoted abundant air time to the discussion of “a white man showing up at an Obama rally armed to the teeth” and of the “racial overtones” implicit in those actions. The only problem is that the gun-toting “racist” was black.
