We interviewed Ethan Van Sciver at his booth at the Albuquerque Comic Expo. Ethan is thought to be one of the greatest pencillers in the comic book industry today. He is best known for his work on the Flash:Rebirth comic books.
We asked Ethan, How long have you been drawing? I have been drawing my whole life my mom was an artist, her father was an architect – everybody in my family kind of draws. I started drawing comics when I was 19 years old. I created a character called Cyber Frog and I decided that I was going to use this character to learn to draw so that someday I could work at Marvel or DC Comics and I did that for about 3 years before I was at DC.”
We then asked, what has been your favorite project that you have worked on so far? “The one I was most proud of probably is Green Lantern Rebirth, which was the restoration of Hal Jordon and the Green Lantern Core to the Green Lantern Mythos and it lead to a whole surge of fandom for the character. Green Lantern I think is safe to say is DC Comics most popular series right now. It all started off with Green Lantern Rebirth and Sinestro core and Blackest night, so that book has remained in print for 7 years now and I am proud of it and I like to look at it every now and then.”
We also asked, how do you feel about DC’s reboot? “Well I am working on it myself. I am working of Fury of Firestorm which is a new reboot of the old Firestorm series and a new way of looking at those characters and it’s dynamite and I am very excited about it and I wouldn’t of had that opportunity to work on Firestorm if it were not for the DC reboot and I think that it’s a smart thing for DC Comics to step back and say look this is a big summer and as a matter a fact every summer for the past few year past few decade there have been comic book movies that have come out and proven to us much to our surprise. In fact as an industry that people who don’t read comic books love superheroes and we always thought before that back in the 90’s that the reason why comic books remained small and a little bit isolated was because people didn’t like superheroes just some people comic book fans, then the Spiderman movie came out and the X-Men movie and the new Batman movies came out and we realized people love superheroes they just are afraid for whatever reason don’t want to get into comic books. So we are looking at this summer and seeing that we have X-Men First Class, Green Lantern and Captain America for all these marvelous people are going to be curious and the idea of offering them a chance to step on board from the ground floor in September I think it’s great, I think it’s the best thing to do right now.”
