Darrion Caldwell of North Carolina State and Northwestern University’s Brandon Precin have both completed their college wrestling careers… but aren’t about to leave the mat just yet, as revealed in two recent features posted this week at InterMat.
Darrion Caldwell, showman… and show stopper: Caldwell is one of the most successful wrestlers ever to put on the NC State Wolfpack singlet. Arguably his greatest achievement was winning the 2009 NCAA 149-pound title in a dominating upset of defending champ Brent Metcalf of the University of Iowa. In that match — and others — Caldwell put on a show of wide-open style, skills, and athleticism that made him a crowd pleaser.
In a question-and-answer session with InterMat’s Andrew Hipps, the 23-year-old Caldwell talks openly about his recent surgery, and when he expects to be back on the mat. The recent graduate also talks about fellow NCAA champs Jordan Burroughs and Bubba Jenkins, 2008 Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo, what his plans are in wrestling, MMA, and much more.
Brandon Precin, ready to write the next chapter: This past season, Precin had climbed to No. 1 in the rankings at 125 pounds after beating wrestling rival Matt McDonough of Iowa — the defending NCAA champion — in the finals of the 2010 Midlands Championships. Just a month later, however, the Hawkeye turned the tables on the Wildcat senior and pinned Precin in dual-meet competition. The Northwestern matman hoped for a different outcome at the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships… but fell again to McDonough in the NCAA semifinals, eventually placing third for the second year in a row.
Precin has already graduated from Northwestern… and from college wrestling. As he discloses in an interview with Andrew Hipps for InterMat, the Wildcat All-American has set his sights on success in freestyle. He’s off to a great start, winning the 2011 University Nationals a month ago in Akron, which automatically qualified him for the 2011 World Team Trials set for Oklahoma City in June.
Note: Both the Darrion Caldwell and Brandon Precin interviews are InterMat Platinum premium features, requiring a paid subscription, which may be purchased online.
