As we all know sharing your life with a dog can be one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have. I personally have a pit-bull and beagle mix and I couldn’t live without her. Here are just a few things you should know before you bring home your new pet or things you should consider changing in your pet’s life.
Before you even bring home your new pet you should decide boundaries such as where the dog will sleep, will he or she be allowed on the furniture, etc. It is much easier to train behaviors than break habits. You must also keep in mind that as a puppy they need to eat four times a day until they are about three months old. Always be sure to change out their water at least twice a day even if the bowl is full, and always make sure they do not get into the trash, if they happen to eat chocolate, coffee grounds, etc, this, as well as a rapid change in diet, could result in gastrointestinal problems. If you decide that your dog is an “outside dog” you’ll need to be sure he or she has a warm, dry, comfortable place to sleep, some states will seize your dog for any less.
Dogs love to play and need plenty of exercise to burn calories, stimulate their minds, and help satisfy urges such as digging and chewing. If they don’t have enough physical and mental stimulation, dogs will tend to get bored which can lead to destructive behaviors.
The amount of exercise and play necessary for your dog depends on age, breed, and of course the individual dog’s personality. Sporting, herding, hound, and terrier breeds such as retrievers, border collie, etc. need a a lot of exercise as compared to toy breeds such as pugs and chihuahuas do not need quite as much.
Most cities have very strict leash laws but this is sometimes not enough for your dog. They need to run and play and they can at the White Rock Lake Dog Park at Mockingbird Park in Dallas, Texas. This is a spacious, two acre, off leash park where your dog is guaranteed to have a blast.
Frequent brushing can reduce or even prevent shedding, reduce chance of a skin problem and make your dog’s coat look shiny and new. Most short haired dog don’t need to be bathed more than a few times a year. You can use regular shampoo, do so in the warm months, and use that opportunity to check for fleas and ticks.
Finally we come to the training, training a dog is actually one of the easiest things in the world. You literally have to treat them exactly like a child. When they are good they get praised, when they are bad they get punished, when they are bored play with them. these are the steps you will need to take before you ever start trying to train tricks. Tricks however are also very easy, once you have a good relationship with your dog. The mental bond between dog and human is worth so much more than any lazy dog training seminar.
