Though the action of hearing and seeing is natural sequential processes, a myriad of factors can interfere with or impede them and result in impairment. The wide variations of these impairments occur due to the many variables that cause these complex conditions.
To add to the difficulty with identifying and addressing these problems the designations of these disabilities vary across professional fields. Generally the changes that persons experience related to the impairment correspond to the degree of severity and age of onset. Persons experiencing these impairments have less impact upon their lives if the loss occurred after they developed language in sharp contrast to those who experienced the condition from birth.
Though vision and hearing were addressed separately they both impact all other learning domains of the person affected by the impairment by causing delays in one or more other areas of development which in turn results into hindrances in academic achievement.
Teachers must first understand these conditions and their profound impacts on development and then work to help children overcome these delays so that students can work to reach their learning potential.
One way teachers can accomplish this goal is to investigate and utilize community resources that support the child’s learning objectives in the school and the community.
