The season one finale of the reboot CBS series “Hawaii Five-0” has stayed true in many ways to its original predecessor. The Monday night (May 16) climatic episode did not disappoint. It had as much action, surprises and some long-awaited answers as did its pilot many months ago. Most television series take years to solve mysteries, but that isn’t the case with this show. If you watched the original series you knew about Wo Fat.
What about Wo Fat?
In the 1968 pilot of the original series viewers were introduced to this arch nemesis of Steve McGarrett’s. During the show’s 12-year run the Cold War threat was very much like the war on terror is today. Wo Fat was an agent of Communist China. This character hounded McGarrett till the very last episode in 1980. Wo Fat was sent to jail, but with the passage of time could have easily gotten out. Now in 2011 Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos) has emerged with ties to China and the Japanese yakuza. One big difference, Wo Fat did not make an appearance in the pilot, but during the holiday season episodes in 2010. There is no question in any one’s mind Wo Fat will continue to strike again and again and …
A Lot of Character Connections
Danny or Danno (Scott Caan) finally hooked up with his ex-wife after a great deal of sexual tension from the pilot episode. However, Rachel (Claire van der Boom) delivers Danny some unexpected news. Something tragic happens to the Governor of Hawaii’s assistant (Kelly Hu). We saw her in past episodes. Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) is offered a chance to get reinstated as a Lieutenant on the Honolulu Police Department (HPD).
At first he declines, but something makes him change his mind. Kono (Grace Park) is visited by Internal Affairs regarding some burnt money that was found, thanks to the Victor Hess money trade-off. Kono is brought up on charges from a neighborhood watch witness when H50 broke into the police evidence room. Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) uncovers who’s been sending him weekly envelopes with items from his father’s tool box. The mystery is solved with a big bang.
It All Comes Crashing Down
The biggest surprise is between Steve McGarrett, Governor Jameson (Jean Smart) and Wo Fat. Everything starts to unravel and you don’t see a way out for any of them. All of their unorthodox ways have started catching up one by one. Perhaps it will be the newest character that is now assisting the team, Jenna Kaye (Lisa Oleynik), who will eventually get them out of this extreme mess. She’s also on the trail of hunting down Wo Fat. One bit of good news “Hawaii Five-0” will be back in the fall of 2011. Now we have to wait for about three months, till then, Aloha.
