Ever since the 1973 Supreme Court decision in the Roe v Wade case legalizing abortion, democrat politicians have had a “free ride” on this issue. They campaign as advocates of free choice, especially in the heavily Catholic Northeast, by claiming to be members of that Faith (the late Senator Ted Kennedy comes to mind), but claiming they refuse to “force” their views on others who may hold a differing belief. On this contentious issue, as all too often on difficult issues, democrat politicans display a total lack of conviction and a desire to “have it both ways!” They assure Pro-Life voters they personally do not believe in abortion and would counsel against it, but do not want to impose their religious beliefs on those who hold the opposite view. With the same breath they tell Pro-Choice voters they support a woman’s right to choose what she does with her body, despite what their religion teaches. No one can doubt that for the past approximately 2,000 years, a vast majority of the Christian Church has been and remains unalterably opposed to abortion on demand!
This political sophistry by democrats, is designed to allow them to pander to all sides of this highly divisive debate. Its akin to an elected official coming out with the statement he/she does not personally believe in murder, but he/she respects a person’s right to commit murder, if that person believes it is okay to deprive someone of their life. Or rape, incest, sodomy, bestiality, bigamy; whatever that person’s personal preference happens to be with regard to social mores. Under this scenario, why should society bother passing laws; just let each individual decide how they should conduct themselves! Unfortunately, this seems to be what many in the progressive camp favor; “if it feels good, do it!” No repercussions, no societal condemnation. No need for prisons! We all become the law unto ourselves. Stop laying a “guilt trip” on people who hold differing views from the “Squares” who are in the majority. Forget the fact that this nation was founded on the principle of majority rule; we respect the “rights” of the minority, but once the majority has reached a decision, that ends all argument or discusion! The alternative is one man rule, or chaos, disguised as political correctness, the situation that presently exists in this country. We have to respect the rights of everyone, no matter how outlandish or offensive to the majority they maybe. A Christian prayer at a graduation ceremony is “banned” because ONE atheist student objects. No nativity scene on public property because a muslim or hindu or whovever might feel intimidated! These examples are becoming all too familiar in this country. Either we are one nation, “Under God” respecting majority rule, or we are different nations that happen to occupy the same continent!
