With the president’s poll numbers having receded back into normal negative territory—Gallup today has his approval rating at 45%—the bitter irony for the Republicans once again becomes inescapable. They can take comfort in the knowledge that no incumbent has ever won reelection with an approval rating lower than 47%. Yet, the GOP currently has no candidate who could easily defeat the eminently beatable Obama.
One contender who possibly could is New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, but he has made it clear he is not running. Or has he? Over the past several days, his staff has emailed out a video and a “top ten” list of his bipartisan accomplishments as chief executive of the Garden State.
Both carry the same message, if in a heavy-handed manner, emphasizing
mindless impotent D.C. bickering versus a tough-minded Republican governor capable of advancing his agenda even in one of the bluest of blue states.
The video in particular has all the trappings of a campaign ad. It shows the governor addressing an audience, patiently explaining the difference between New Jersey under his stewardship and Washington under Obama’s. Christie takes pains to emphasize that the gridlock in DC is bi-directional, noting that it stems from
Republicans who can’t get along with Democrats [and] Democrats who can’t get along with Republicans. You see folks who are insulting the President of the United States purely for partisan reasons, even when they agree with him, just for politics. And you see good Republicans who are trying to discuss the big issues, who are being demagogued by Democrats who care only about politics, too. It’s on both sides….
Now, that’s one way to go about public service and public life…. But in New Jersey, we’ve decided to take a much different approach.
The video cuts off there, leaving the viewer to wonder what comes next. Hints are dropped in links to the New Jersey gubernatorial website and Christie’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
