The first and only auction house to set foot in Miami, Hammer & Block Auctioneers, has discovered a specialized but profitable corner of the local market: the art auction.
With less than six months established in the Wynwood-Edgewater District of Miami, Hammer & Block Auctioneers has started an unprecedented trade through consignments which are aimed to help the emergent artistic community, galleries and the public looking for ways to invest, sell and buy art at accessible prices.
“We have done only two Live online auctions at our Fashion District space, one in February and another one in March which was an auction of Cuban & Latin American art,” says British Auctioneer Neil Hunt, CEO of Hammer & Block Auctioneers, a firm that also specializes in business liquidations and provides auction services to local charities to obtain money from antiques, furniture and jewelry.
For the first time, on May 20th, 2011 Hammer & Block Auctioneers will have its Live Online auction outside their space to present the auction at L M N T Contemporary Arts, the recently inaugurated multipurpose gallery space located just one block west of North Miami Avenue on 36 Street at the heart of Wynwood.
To start off winning with such a fresh new business, Hammer & Block Auctioneers is combining business acumen with a flair for showmanship, introducing new ways to promote sales engaging directly with the public.
“Our company shares with L M N T the same vision of contemporary art and how it should be presented; L M N T offered the ideal place to showcase some of the most exciting contemporary artists in a very elegant way,” says Hunt.
L M N T, one of the latest gallery spaces to open up in Wynwood is owned by Gino Tozzi, a Venezuelan-Italian entrepreneur that is offering the Miami art community another possibility to engage with the arts and to experience its different modes of production.
“The framework of an auction offers a different type of experience for the public and the collector, than the usual gallery walks, art fairs, or the regular purchasing experience,” says Daniella Sforza, L M N T Curating Director.
“Our partnering in this initiative is a way of further cooperating amongst each other, pooling artists, talent, know-how and a strong desire to foment the arts in Miami,” says Sforza.
Hammer & Block has also established an Emergent Artist Program based on consignments working directly with non-represented artists in the local scene.
The program will feature artists during the Second Saturday’s Art Walk allowing them to display their works prior to the Hammer & Block Live Online Auction.
Artists will also have access to print their images in the Hammer & Block Catalog which automatically will generate publicity and exposure. The company also assists them with promotion in the H&B newsletter and with extensive online and print advertising.
“If you can’t come physically to the auction you can bid online through Proxybid, the World’s #1 provider of live webcast auctions,” says Hunt.
Currently, Hammer & Block has in consignment a great selection of original lithographs from Picasso, Salvador Dali and Goya to original works from artists such as Kcho, Enrique Grau, Carlos Quintana, Marcelo Bonevardi, Joaquin Torres Garcia, David Manzur, among others.
Additional information will be posted at Hammer & Block Catalog which will be available online at www.hammerandblock.com from Friday, May 6th, 2011.
For the May 20th Live Online Auction, Hammer & Block Auctioneers has partnered with Eclectic Network, a new-media relations company that is promoting and advertising the event through What’s Up Miami ? blog and through our own icedjamb.com, the fastest-growing local content network in the U.S with over 25 million page views per month.
