Continuing the party line that Republicans want to kill seniors by keeping the nation solvent, a left wing organization has released an ad showing a wheelchair-bound senior citizen tossed off a cliff.
The ad has no voices, just the music of “America the Beautiful” with “grandma” being pushed about in a wheelchair by a well dressed man – perhaps the “typical” Republican.
“In 1965, Americans made Medicare into law,” the ad states.
The ad goes on to state that Medicare provides health coverage for 46 million Americans, many of whom make less than $28,000 per year.
“Now, Republicans want to privatize Medicare,” the ad continues.
At the end, “grandma” is pushed out of the wheelchair over a cliff.
“Is America Beautiful without Medicare?” the ad asks before closing.
The ad is put out by the far left wing group Agenda Project, that claims its goal is to “build a powerful, intelligent, well-connected political movement capable of identifying and advancing rational, effective ideas in the public debate and in so doing ensure our country’s enduring success.”
Rational? Intelligent? Literally killing grandma to privatize Medicare is rational and intelligent?
Fox News host Neil Cavuto confronted Agenda Project founder Erica Payne on the ad.
“This is nuts,” Cavuto said, wondering how it is that attempting to keep a program like Medicare solvent is equivalent to killing grandma.
Payne quoted her “friend,” Rev. Jim Wallis, and said that “a nation’s budget is really a moral document.”
In other words, Payne thinks it’s moral to keep spending money the country doesn’t have to pay for a program that is a major driver in the nation’s debt. As Cavuto pointed out, Medicare is set to run out of funds five years earlier than originally thought.
Payne countered with the usual liberal argument – cut defense and raise taxes.
Apparently, Payne is unaware of the constitutional mandate the government has to provide for the nation’s defense.
Cavuto correctly noted that Ryan’s plan does not eliminate the program, but does make some cuts to keep it solvent. Moreover, Ryan’s budget does not affect seniors currently on the program.
“You’re fearmongering, Erica,” Cavuto said pointedly.
But Payne could not tell Cavuto what she would say to those same seniors who found themselves without Medicare after the plan goes broke. She was also unable to answer Cavuto’s question regarding the fact that Obamacare strips $500 billion from Medicare.
Payne did spend much of the exchange bashing private industry – and therein lies the main pillar of the left’s argument.
For liberals like Payne, private insurance is “evil” and must be done away with.
The answer is always the same – raise taxes, spend more money than the country has, blame former President George W. Bush, and enact more laws designed to strip Americans of their personal freedom.
Anyone who disagrees is a monster who wants to kill grandma. This plays well among hosts at MSNBC and various far left wing web sites, but Americans are waking up to the reality that America is going broke – and something needs to be done.
Liberal Democrats tried this tactic once before and it failed. Hopefully, voters will see through the tactic and reject it in 2012.
