Giant Growth has been cut from Wizards of the Coast’s upcoming Magic: the Gathering 2012 Core Set M12. That means Giant Spider has won “Core Set Survivor” and is the sole Magic: the Gathering card to have been printed in every core set since Alpha.
Why did Giant Growth get the axe from M12? Most likely due to its interaction with Infect – making it “too powerful” for Standard. Just because Giant Growth won’t be in M12 that doesn’t mean we won’t see it in another set in the not too distant future. Fireball was reprinted in Darksteel and Birds of Paradise made a showing in Ravnica. Will Giant Growth appear in Innistrad?
With this news comes the probability that next year’s Magic: the Gathering 2013 Core Set M13 won’t feature any cards to see print in every core set since Alpha.
Monty Ashley explains “Core Set Survivor” in the latest Magic Arcana entry:
“The original Magic core set was Limited Edition Alpha, which contained 285 cards, not counting basic lands. Then all of those cards were reprinted in Limited Edition Beta, which also added Circle of Protection: Black and Tropical Island, which had been mysteriously left out of Alpha.
Then Revised had a slightly different set of cards, and only 250 of the cards from Alpha were still in the core set. Unlimited changed the core set again, and only 211 cards had been in every core set.
You get the idea. Here’s the complete breakdown:
Alpha : 285
Fourth Edition: 211
Fifth Edition: 151
Sixth Edition: 79
Seventh Edition: 60
Eighth Edition: 40
Ninth Edition: 24
Tenth Edition: 16
Magic 2010: 8
Magic 2011: 2″
