After what seems like forever, the conclusion of War of the Green Lanterns is upon us. Scheduling snafus aside, this week should provide a conclusion that not only promises to change the GL universe but maybe give us a peek into September’s revamped universe.
But before you head out to your comic shops, let’s recap the events that have transpired so far.
BE WARNED: SPOILERS AHEAD
Part 1 (Green Lantern #64)
Salaak and a squad of Lanterns are dispatched by the Guardians to apprehend Hal Jordan and bring him back to Oa for working with the other Lantern Corps. Speaking of Hal, he and the leaders of the other Corps, have stumbled upon Kronas Book of the Black. Atrocitus reveals that he knew Krona was behind the massacre of his sector the whole time and that he was hunting the entities, to the chagrin of Hal. The Book suddenly opens revealing Lyssa Drak. She begins to capture each of the Lanterns when Sinestro tells Hal to fire his ring at his with all his power. The ensuing blast catapaults Hal out of the Book’s clutches. As the rest are sucked in, their rings are left behind. Hal goes to pick them up when Salaak and his squad appear.
Back on Oa, Krona and the entities ambush the Guardians. The fight concludes with the Guardians becoming possessed by the entities. Krona takes Parallax to the Central Power Battery and places him in it again causing a yellow backlash to every Green Lantern. With the “Impurity Restored”, the entire Green Lantern Corps is now under the control of Krona. Hal sees Parallax and realizes what’s going on, but Salaak and the others begin to attack him. Hal takes the rings of his friends and flies into space, away from the other Lanterns. The issue ends with Hal calling for any Lantern for help as Krona stands with his possessed Guardians.
“I turned your Manhunters against the universe. Now it’s time to do the same with your Green Lanterns. They belong to me as do you, Guadians. It’s time to show the universe the true power of the Green Lantern Corps.” – Krona
Part 2 (Green Lantern Corps #58)
Issue starts with a nice character study of Kyle and John; their motivations, differences etc… It then shows Kyle, John, Ganthet, Soranik, Boodika and Hanu leaving Qward for Oa. When they arrive, they see the Alpha Lanterns floating in space deactivated. Before they can figure out what’s going on, they all see Parallax as the impurity is restored. Ganthet and Kyle assess the situation and figure it to be Krona when Soranik and the others (minus John) are clearly under the fear entity’s control. They fly down towards Oa as Kyle tries to stop his girlfriend. John stops him before he gets them captured but Kyle becomes overcome with fear and fires an assault on his friend. John fires back as the two lanterns throw down. Ganthet starts to overcome the influence as he separates the two. He uses his ring (and the last of his will) to get Kyle and John’s rings off. When he is successful his own ring begins to overload and explodes, taking his hand with it.
Free from Parallax’s influence, John and Kyle retrieve Ganthet and take shelter from the renegade Lanterns. Ganthet forces the two underground because of his residual power will gather the others. The issue ends with Ganthet awaiting the Lanterns to take him back to Krona.
“Kyle Rayner, I was NEVER more important than you. Did you think it an accident I franted you the last power ring? You were our best hope then, and you still are today.” – Ganthet
Part 3 (Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #8)
The issue begins with Guy, Kilowog and Arisia heading back to Oa as they discuss Guy’s secret pact with Atrocitus. All of a sudden, the three feel Parallax’s influence as Arisia flies away towards Oa, along with a good hundred other Lanterns. The two get overwhelmed by the numbers when they are both captured. Guy figures since he and Kilowog weren’t affected, there should be others. Kilowog agrees and blasts him away from the others as he is contained. Guy tries to reach anyone else when Hal hears his call. Guy tells him to go to the Green House and hours later they meet up. The two rendezvous as they exchange information. The two bicker over what the other was doing when Guy suggests they take their rings off. Hal refuses which results in them fighting. A few pages of ring slinging later, and the two finally realize that Parallax is causing them to do this and they willfully disengage, taking their rings off. The two recover as they realize that they are the only ones who can save the Corps.
“We’re just flesh and bone now.”
“That’s what we’ve always been, Guy. Now Krona and Parallax can’t hook into our minds. Which mean we have only one thing left to worry about… How do we save the Corps?” – Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan
