The Get Outdoors Expo made its debut in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 13th and 14th, 2011 at the South Towne Exposition Center. This expo was designed to bring the active outdoor lifestyle community and outdoor adventure businesses together throughout the Wasatch Front to experience and see some of the newest gear, ventures, destinations and apparel available in the market. There was fun and entertainment for both adults and kids during these two days.
Gibbons Slacklines was busy with quite a few slacklines displayed for everyone to test their balance on. It was exciting to see those that had quite a bit of experience bouncing and flipping on the slacklines. Some of them were jumping from one slackline to another making it look so easy.
In the tent exhibit area, BlackPine Turbo Tents were displayed. These fast set-up tents were so easy to pitch and you didn’t have to deal with poles falling apart or trying to get them through slots to raise it up. They were extremely convenient coming in a two-man tent all the way up to a 10-12 man tent.
Another convenient outdoor piece of gear that was available at the expo was the Jakpak. This is the world’s first all-in-one waterproof jacket, tent and sleeping bag. There is a tent and sleeping bag integrated into the jacket stored in zip-up pouches. The tent is detachable and can be removed and stored separately.
Suunto presented their outdoor sports instruments. These instruments have features such as a compass, depth meter, altimeter, 12-channel GPS, altitude log, heart-rate monitor, and temperature meter. Apa Sherpa, the man who just summited Mount Everest for the 21st time and broke his own record, who is also a Suunto ambassador, was wearing one of the latest Suunto outdoor sports instruments on his trek.
Massive kites for snowkiting and kiteboarding decorated another booth along with footage of this adventurous, extreme sport. It is getting very popular amongst the outdoor enthusiasts here in Utah.
ROKIT Fuel for Humans is a new booster bar that expo attendees were able to sample. They are very tasty nutrition bars that contain ingredients that provide fuel for your body while you’re out scaling a wall, trying out a new mountain biking trail, or taking a trek out in the wilderness.
The Peddlefest main stage had BMX experts performing incredible stunts on the ramps that just had the crowd in awe of the air they were getting on their bikes.
The Vertical Zone was the heart of the climbing walls and gear available from shops such as Liberty Mountain, La Sportiva, The Front Climbing Club, Momentum Indoor Climbing and Revolution Climbing. There were climbing demos for kids and adults, a bouldering wall, and the Front Climbing Club Finals were held on Saturday night.
The Get Outdoors Expo definitely provided a fantastic variety of different outdoor sports available to anyone. It was really amazing to see how the outdoor industry has encouraged and enticed more to be actively involved in newer sports such as kiteboarding and slacklining as well as educating on the wonders and rewards one can receive on a canyoneering trip or some other expedition in the great outdoors. There is certainly much to be explored in the outdoors of Utah and the Get Outdoors Expo portrayed it with excellence.
