The weather has been unpredictable all over the country so far in 2011. One thing we have to worry about in Atlanta is lightning strikes. With all the trees in the Metro Atlanta area, lightning can be a real problem when it comes to damage to homes, cars, and residents coming into contact with live fallen power lines.
Lightning kills an average of 58 people and injures approximately 300 others each year. According to the National Weather Service, lightning can strike as far as 10 miles from the area where it is raining, about the distance you can hear thunder. If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance, so you should be cautious and seek safe shelter immediately.
Georgia Tech each year publishes a list of safety tips to follow when it comes to lightning.
