The Gears of War 3 beta ends on May 15, 2011. This Sunday. After delving into the Beta for three weeks and unlocking some cool stuff, its time for impressions.
Epic Game’s Studios has improved upon the overall design of the game. There are a lot more customization options this time around in medals, weapon load-outs, and character selections. Throughout the Beta, and also in the retail game, players will be able to unlock many character skins, medals, weapon skins, and executions. This has added a refreshing element to the design of Gears. In the past, gamers were limited to a set of the same characters and weapons. This time around, gamers can make their multiplayer characters more unique. There are also female Gears characters this time. There are a lot of girl gamers out there who enjoy Gears of War, so it is a refreshing change to have female characters to choose.
Choice of starting weapons has also improved. Now players are able to choose between three different assault rifles and two shotguns. Depending on the map, team strategy and style of play, players can choose what weapon fits best for their particular style.
There is a more diverse weapon selection in this game. It is no longer a one-gun game. In the past, the shotgun had dominated in Gears of War. This time there are two shotguns to choose from; the Gnasher or a Sawed-off double barrel Shotgun most gamers call the DBS. The DBS is very powerful, and designed to be friendly to players who are new or have difficulty with getting a handle on the Gnasher. The DBS can kill 5 enemies at once, but the range is very short and the reload time very long compared to the other starting weapons. There is a more diverse weapon array this time. Gamers in the Beta used many different weapons, rather than just focusing exclusively on Shotgun battles.
The Retro Lancer is the newest assault rifle. And it is one of the best weapons overall, effective if hip-fired close range and good over medium range. Its less effective at long range. It also has a bayonet at the end. Players can charge opponents and skewer them if successful with the charge.
A new power weapon called the Digger Launcher is another very fun weapon. It shoots a creature that tunnels under the ground surfacing to destroy the enemy if it makes contact. It tunnels under cover. Enough said; this gun is pure fun.
Another great addition is a Mantle Kick. This is hands down one of the best new design elements added to Gears of War 3. Players can kick and stun an opponent by mantling cover. It is pure fun watching your stunned enemy as they wait for their inevitable destruction.
A ribbon award system has been added to Gears. The ribbons are fun to get and add a great level of replay ability to the game. An experience system allows players to advance towards unlocking new skins for their weapons and characters.
Three exciting new modes were available in the Beta; Team Death Match, Capture the Leader, and King of the Hill. All of these modes are designed to allow newer players to have an easier time orientating themselves to the game allowing for respawning after you get killed.
That is just a small sampling of all the great stuff going on in Gears of War 3. There will be an expanded campaign, Horde, and Beast Modes in the retail game. So, Gears of War 3 looks to be a fantastic title coming out in Fall 2011! Stay tuned for more articles on Gears of War 3.
