Epic Games’ epic finale in the battle for planet Sera has gamers chomping at the bit to get their hands on whichever pack variation they can, leading Microsoft to announce today that Gears of War 3 has become the fastest pre-ordered title in the history of the Xbox 360.
Earlier today, Microsoft announced that Gears of War 3 surpassed the one millionth pre-order milestone, having been helped by the massive hype built up by the hugely successful Gears of War 3 public multiplayer beta. While not the record shattering that both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops did, it’s still something quite impressive.
The Gears 3 multiplayer beta drew in a colossal 1.29 million players from around the globe and brought them together over four new maps playing three distinct game modes running on dedicated servers for the first time in the series’ history, logging in over 249 years worth of gameplay over Xbox LIVE during the beta’s short stint online.
“An overwhelming success – we can’t thank the fans enough,” said Epic Games Design Director Cliff Bleszinski. “While the beta was a fun way to give players an early taste of our game, it also provided us with invaluable feedback to help us refine and polish ‘Gears of War 3’ to ensure it’s truly the culmination of the trilogy we promised to the fans.”
Also released today are the phenominal statistics of the beta run, listed below:
- 1.29 million players participated in the beta
- 145 different countries participated
- 249 years worth of gameplay overall
- Over 11 million matches completed
- More than 927 million kills recorded
- More than 131 million executions performed
- Over 23 million deaths by chainsaw
- More than 23 billion bullets fired
- 460 million ribbons and 294 million medals earned
- 435,000 earned the Thrashball Cole skin to use in the full retail game
- 234,000 earned the exclusive Gold Retro Lancer rifle to use in the full retail game
There’s still time to help Epic Games add to their pre-order numbers. Head over to Best Buy in the Mall of New Hampshire on South Willow and check out their nifty touchscreen pre-order kiosk in the back of the gaming department, which also has a few pre-order goodies on some of the other games you’re losing sleep over.
