Donovan Ricketts was injured in the first half, Josh Saunders received a red card, but the Galaxy were able to hold off the Earthquakes and extend their unbeaten streak to 10 games.
Donovan Ricketts had to leave the game in the 24th minute when he hurt his left arm. He came out to punch the ball away and hurt his elbow as an Earthquakes player came crashing into him. The injury is thought to be a broken forearm. Ricketts was replaced by Josh Saunders, but Saunders was ejected just before halftime. He received a red card for an elbow on Steven Lenhart. Lenhart was the instigator of the play, he headed the ball out of Saunders’ hands while he was holding it, which is an illegal play. Saunders than brought his elbow up while picking the ball up and elbowed Lenhart in the face. Saunders was ejected and Lenhart received a yellow card. The Galaxy were forced to play a man down and with midfielder Mike Magee in goal.
Mike Magee was creditied with six saves. He was tested a couple of times from distance, but managed to keep the ball out of the net. Magee is only 5’10” which is extremely short for a goalkeeper, but did a good job coming out of the goal and stopping a couple of chances.
The Galaxy’s defense deserves a lot of credit. Omar Gonzalez won almost everything in the air, and Berhalter was a steadying influence. De La Garza did an excellent job of shutting down Jamaican international Ryan Johnson. The team protected Mike Magee by controlling a good amount of possession and bunkering down on defense. They were able to create a couple of chances on the other end of the field.
San Jose Earthquakes open the game with a couple of chances. Ricketts was able to make two point-blank saves, and the post denied another chance in the first five minutes. Bruce Arena elected to start Gregg Berhalter at CB, pushing A.J. De La Garza to the outside, and Sean Franklin to the bench. Bruce Arena made the switch to combat the physicality of Steven Lenhart up front for the Earthquakes. Berhalter committed a foul on Lenhart away from the ball, which gave San Jose a great chance on a free kick just outside the box.
The team put together a great effort on both ends of the pitch. They worked extremely hard and came away with a well-earned point. That result was severely in doubt, in the opening minutes and again when they lost both keepers.
The team was fined $5000 for not including David Beckham on last week’s injury report. Beckham has been out with back spasms and missed the game with the Earthquakes. Donovan also missed the game, he is still away with the US National team, but will be back for the team’s US Open Cup game against the LA Blues on Tuesday. The Galaxy will be forced to start third-string goalkeeper Brian Perk for their July 4th matchup against the Seattle Sounders.
