RHP Anthony Varvaro (0-0, 0.00) was called up to Atlanta 7/29 and has pitched in 1 game facing 9 batters. In his 2.0 IP he has walked 3 while striking out 4. This is Varvaro’s second trip to the Majors-he pitched 4 games in the American League last season for the Seattle Mariners.
C J.C. Boscan (.000, 0 HRs/ 0 RBI) was called up to the big league club due to C Brian McCann being placed on the 15-day DL. Boscan has had 1 at-bat.
OF Jose Constanza (.125, 0 HRs/ 1 RBI) was called up 7/29 as a result of CF Nate McLouth going on the 15-day DL. This is his first trip to the Show. Constanza has played in 2 games and is 1-for-8. Players Assigned to Gwinnett:
C Shawn McGill (.267, 0 HRs/ 0 RBI) promoted from Single-A Lynchburg. He has played in 5 games with Gwinnett.
C Wil Nievas (.250, 0 HRs/ 0 RBI) was acquired from the Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers affiliate) of the Pacific Coast League. He was acquired because of his experience- Nievas is 33 years old and has played 282 games in the Majors over 8 seasons with the Padres, Yankees, Nationals and Brewers. Due to the uncertainty of McCann’s injury and lack of catchers in the organization with ML experience, signing a catcher with big league experience was a important move.
Assigned for Reassignment:
IF Diory Hernandez has had troubles in the field this season and has been assigned for reassignment.
The G-Braves and Indians play the second of the four game series Sunday at Coolray Field. First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. Top prospect RHP Julio Teheran (11-1, 1.67 ERA) will start for Gwinnett while the Indians will send RHP Brad Lincoln (7-7, 3.81 ERA) to the mound.
