We’re not Trekkies here at Comedy Examiner HQ (though we will admit to thoroughly enjoying JJ Abrams’ lens-flare-happy take on the material a couple summers back), especially when it comes to Star Trek-related humor: photoshops of Captain Kirk wrasslin’ some lizard-dude near a big rock aren’t automatically hilarious to us, nor are people who have taught themselves to tell dirty jokes in Klingon (Q’aplah?). But today’s Funny Photo has defied the odds to be both Star Trek-related and funny, a combination we never thought we’d see. Check it out below, my gentle Examiner readers…
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with Trekkies (that’s people that love Star Trek, for the pop-culturally-challenged), it’s just that…well…Star Trek enthusiasts are known for a few different things, and none of them are “raw animal magnetism”, “sex appeal”, or “being a playa”. So, if you’re a Trekkie– which is to say: if you’re a raging nerd— then it’s not like you get the chance to propose marriage to someone every day. When one comes along, you take it.
The question then becomes: should you make your proposal Star Trek-themed? In almost every situation, the answer to this question is “no”. Such a question falls into the same group of queries like, “Is it OK for a 40-year-old man to have Chewbacca on his bed sheets?” and “Should I show her my comic book collection on the first date?”: bad ideas that can only hurt your game. Then again, if you’re proposing to someone that’s also a Trekkie, all bets are off.
That could be what’s going on in the photo over there on the left– click the “Slideshow” box to see it embiggened– but it could also be that the gentleman who’s just handed over that sizable ring has made a terrible mistake (but let’s be frank: he could’ve put a picture of a dead kitten in that box and she would’ve said yes– that ring is effing enormous). We’ll never know. All we can do is speculate, point, laugh, and applaud this nerd’s courage. Our hat is off to you, Nameless Romantic Trekkie: you are an inspiration to literally hundreds.
