Go to any health store these days and you can find walls of organic produce, but how do you know if it is really organic, safe and local? Sure we can take the word of the market, or you can go to the near east side of Indy and see for yourself!
Fruit loop Acres is located at 341 N. Hamilton Ave, right in the suburbs of Indy’s East side. Owners Kay and Sue have been there for 17 years now, acquiring more lots as houses beside them are torn down, and planting all kinds of wonderful fruit, vegetables and nut trees. Artsy and crafty are the words for this place along with fun, colorful and vibrant, just like the two ladies who live at and run this place. It’s a peaceful oasis in the middle of the urban setting where the trees hide them from the concrete of Indy, and transport you to a place that is peace, love, fun and full of health and vibrant living.
It’s more than a business for these ladies; it’s about the big picture as well. Saving the earth through sustainability is a passion, and it shows. They really know their stuff, and are happy to pass along that knowledge as well. Not only do they operate the U-Pick fruit from their home, they also host seminars as well. Workshops coming up include such things as “Creating great compost and exploring the concept of compostable privies” and “Grafting fruit and nut tree stock”. Late summer workshops coming up include topics such as seed saving, beekeeping and root cellaring.
They also host the UrbanStead festival in August among the lush green of their homestead that features a local foods pitch-in, Microbrews, yoga amongst nature and live music.
100% local food, righteously grown
They also have a ‘to your door’ cart they have been taking to near East side communities for a few years now. They hope to expand this service to more neighborhoods in the near future. Want an easier way to get this great produce? Kay and Sue have a subscription service where you get a weekly allotment of the best of their hard work. Not sure what to do with the fresh fruit and vegetables they offer? No problem, the subscription service comes with a newsletter detailing among many other things, what’s in the order, how to store it and recipes to maximize your fruit and veggie order to the fullest.
It’s a pleasure to see such passion from these ladies, and you can feel a sense of the love they put into every bit of fruit and vegetable they offer from this oasis.
If you’re into local, sustainable, organic foods, this is the place to come. If your into learning how to grow your own organic fruit or vegetables, raise bees, make your own compost, or any number of other Earth friendly things we can all do to save our planet, live better, or contribute to our own health, these are the ladies to talk to.
What do they offer from this site?
Black raspberries, cherries, apricots, peaches, plums, apples, pears, dewberries, blackberries, elderberries, gooseberries, persimmons, white grapes, rhubarb very limited honey, German noble variety Hops, heart nuts, and black walnuts ( more fruit and vegetables available from the subscription service and the’ to your door’ cart).
