It is no joke. The folks at city hall are finally realizing that kicking the can down the road is no longer possible. In the past Fresno, like other cities, states and yes even our federal government believed they could just kick the economic problems down to the next council, governor or President. But no more.
Fresno’s woes just keep coming. Every time the public turns around the board of supervisors, or city council or somebody is having a fit over the latest budget woes.
The city has attempted to shrink itself as much as possible. Just this past week the liberal members (union supported) finally caved in the face of economic pressure. The mayor had asked them nicely to vote of privatization of the trash pick-up; this move would have saved the city 5 million, and added another 2 million in fees. But the trash union encouraged its members to reject the plan.
This week the mayor offered an alternate plan which put the liberal members and the powerful police union on notice. Accept a 3% across the board cut, plus the members must contribute to their retirement packages and medical. The union said, “Nyet!”
So the mayor got creative…..if the union does not work with the city, the city will ground and sell the police helicopter, that will save the city a million bucks a year. Also, the city will fire 65 police officers. Police Chief Jerry Dyer says it is blackmail.
Maybe it is, but we the people can no longer afford to pay the freight. Time for a little skin in the game.
