Just off the French Camp exit of Highway 99, on the French Camp golf course, is a gem of a cafe that has some of the best Cheap Eats the area of Stockton has to offer. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner this place is a must go for anybody with a big appetite, and thin wallet. French Camp Sports Cafe staff is very friendly and attentive. The cafe is tidy and well lit. The cafe has two pool tables, and hosts pool tournaments every Wednesday and Friday, poker tournaments on Saturday, and karaoke on Saturday and Sunday. Throughout the cafe several strategically placed large flatscreen televisions broadcast everything from country music videos, to local and international news, to yes, sports of all kinds. Outdoor tables are also available, weather permitting. There are golfers, families, business people, singles and retired folks that patronize the cafe, and all are well behaved and welcome. It’s a comfortable place for folks to relax and take a well deserved break. So, on to breakfast!
Breakfast is served from 7a.m. to 11a.m., and is priced from around $5.00 for the two eggs and biscuits and gravy, to $9.95 for the steak and eggs. All breakfasts come with spuds and toast. Hungry as a lumberjack this morning, the chicken fried steak and eggs was definitely the way to go. The huge chicken fried steak platter arrived hot and in a timely manner. The chicken fried steak was crisp, topped with an incredible homemade sausage gravy and served with two eggs, potatoes with onions and bell peppers, and toast. For $6.50 it can’t be beat. Every day except Sunday, from 7a.m. to 10a.m., French Camp Sports Cafe offers a well rotated breakfast buffet with all the standard fare at the cost of $6.95. Breakfast for two, $16.00 including coffee, and tip.
Lunch is also incredible at French Camp Sports Cafe. The cafe offers deli sandwiches all day starting at $4.95. The burgers are heavenly and they too start at around $5.00, and for lighter eaters the salads (starting at $4.95) are fresh and generous in size, or one can order off the starter menu as well. All lunch items and burger items come with a choice of soup, salad, french fries or potato salad, and are available all day. Try the chicken wrap; for $6.95 it is a unique and flavorful item with grilled chicken, fresh spinach, tomatoes and feta cheese wrapped and grilled in a sun dried tortilla. The wrap is finished with an avocado mayo that is to die for! Lunch for two, under $15.00 including iced tea, and tip.
Not mentioning dinner at French Camp Sports Cafe would be a sin, and the best bang for the buck would have to be the Sunday prime rib. One can savor in an 8oz cut for $9.95 or a 12oz cut for $4.00 more. Most dinners start at $9.95, (even the steak dinner) and there is only one item priced at $16.95. The dinner menu has a little bit of everything. From chicken, to salmon, to pork chops, to the steaks, and a nightly dinner special it’s all amazing; portions are not meager by any means. All dinners are served with endless sourdough bread, soup or salad, fresh veggies, and choice of french fries, or a baked potato with the works. Everything is freshly made, in house. Last Sunday the soup was New England clam chowder, homemade and perfect. Dinner for two, under $25.00 including soda, and tip.
If not very hungry, or just stopping by for a tasty and well made cocktail, take a nibble at the starters menu. Items range from $2.95 to $20.00. Fried ravioli, an anti pasto tray that is loaded with fresh meats, cheeses, veggies and sourdough bread or fresh grilled oysters either by the single or the dozen can satisfy one or two thirsty people well in to the evening. Karaoke, nibbles and a couple of cocktails for two, Under $20.00.
French Camp Sports Cafe hails as the place for the best Bloody Mary this lover of food has ever tasted, and on Sunday it is the house specialty drink at just $3.50 a pint (yikes!). Sunday champagne brunch, served from 9a.m. to 1p.m. is a little more expensive ($16.95) than the basic fare at French Camp Sports Cafe, but it’s a tasty way to spoil or impress that certain some one, and has delicious items such as Eggs Benedict, seafood crepes, french toast, and fresh seasonal fruit. French Camp Sports Cafe is a great place for everybody. Come in hungry, or go in and get hungry while there, but upon departure there will be no empty stomachs…or wallets. Eat Cheap Stockton!
