“I’m a Good R-Truth.”
Now we come to the night’s main event. Three disgruntled young stars, Miz, Christian and R-Truth take on John Cena, Alex Riley and Randy Orton. The stipulations are:
A.) One fall to finish
B.) 20 Minute Time Limit
C.) 6-Man Elimination Match
Which means that yeah, given the rest of the votes tonight the WWE are leaving nothing to chance. This last choice essentially amounts to, “Do you want to see one match, one twenty minute match, or a lot of matches of indeterminate time involving the whole main event roster?” Yeah, do I really even have to say which way the vote goes. The cameos by Christian and Orton this week make this one definitely worth seeing. Honestly this is how Raw and Smackdown should work each week. Instead of fixed rosters why not give mainstays such as John Cena obvious permanent slots on Raw (because as the recent draft cemented for us, Cena isn’t going anywhere) while allowing other stars rotating slots on both shows.
The huge pop for Orton this week proves that when you give fans time to miss you they appreciate it a lot more when they see you again. Good match here, with the disgruntles managing to command the match for most of it, keeping Cena from tagging out and each wrestler taking turns pounding on him. Finally he manages to make it to the turnbuckle, tagging in Orton. Riley is the first man eliminated, followed by The Miz. Truth goes down next following an RKO from Orton. Christian rushes the ring, spearing Orton and taking him out. Christian is too busy celebrating to notice Cena approaching from behind. After a “from the dead” RKO Cena puts him in the STF causing him to tap. That’s it. Game over, man.
Another 3-hour Raw closes out and again I’m left with the unshakable feeling that nothing really happened. Why does the WWE hate us IWC? Why do they insist on denying us our love of Zack Ryder by at least giving the poor guy a match? Instead he’s relegated to dark matches on sister program, Superstars, ones visible only on WWE.com. These 3-hour shows come with so much promise but it always seems to devolve into Michael Cole and Vickie Guerrero in a dance contest. Here’s a thought, how about a Royal Rumble featuring such underexposed stars as Primo, Zack Ryder, JTG, Chris Masters, Drew McIntyre, Justin Gabriel, Tyler Reks and Jey Uso. You have time, you have stars who need that time, yet you throw it away to fluff pieces. Someone, somewhere please tell me why.
I know I haven’t said much about it but JTG (formerly of Cryme Time) is another recent draftee from SmackDown who has as of yet received no love on Raw. He’s an amazing worker with a very impressive wrestling repertoire but he gets even less face time on Raw than Zack Ryder.
Ok, y’know what? From here on, I’m officialy declaring a moratorium on the Ryder-baiting. Or any expectations of Raw heeding fan input. It’s hitting me now that WWE genuinely don’t care one way or another what the IWC has to say about anything. They’re going to play their “stodgy old monolith unwilling to change with the times” schtick for better or for worse and we’re going to either accept it or don’t. John Cena’s going to carry the title from now until WrestleMania 28 and his match against the Rock, just like he promised and those of you who don’t like it can kick rocks.
Next week is a “Roulette” themed Raw, whatever that means. Shawn Michaels will be the special guest. Not sure what all this means exactly but Michaels on Raw is always a good thing. I’ll hazard a guess and say his best bud Triple-H won’t be far behind.
And with that another episode of Them’s Fightin’ Words comes to a close. Pretty meh Raw this week. Not that it was bad but it all just feels so done before. There are a couple of exciting pieces being put into place though so hopefully things will pick up going forward. Maybe next week.
Thanks for reading.
