Many wine shops may say that they offer something for everyone, but at the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant, there really is the opportunity for patrons to have it all.
The owners consist of a Master Sommelier and James Beard Foundation “Sommelier of the Year” ; an innovative developer of some of San Francisco’s most creative wine lists; an online wine merchant and speaker; as well as former Restaurant Director and Cellar Master and founder of the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley; each bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the endeavor. Not to mention a staff who actually gets to regularly taste the wines they sell, so they can provide you with wine ideas that are based in first-hand tasting experience.
Located in San Francisco’s historic and beloved Ferry Building on the Embarcadero, the Wine Merchant is part wine shop, part wine bar and entirely a place that truly celebrates wine.
The wine shop focuses on artisanal wines from smaller producers around the world, and strives to bring a personal and caring touch to the wine-buying experience. For the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant owners, the phrase “wine merchant” is more than just a catchy title.
“A real wine merchant understands wine. A real wine merchant has the courage and experience to find and present new discoveries because they know the producers…not just because they read a few magazines. A real wine merchant can ask the right questions to help make your wine experience fun and unique—whether it’s dinner on Tuesday night, or a once in a lifetime event. At the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant, we are obsessed—make that possessed—by what it means to be a real wine merchant. We put the wines that we love on the shelves & the wines that we have evaluated and selected with care and passion.”
The wine bar provides a casual, intimate spot in which to sample some of the many wines the shop has for sale, and includes wines by the glass, as well as comprehensive wine flights, in addition to small plates of meats, cheeses, breads and olives.
But the Wine Merchant doesn’t stop there. They also offer a series of wine-producer events in the wine bar on Wednesdays from 4:30-7:30pm where you can sample wines with the people who have actually made them.
Upcoming producers include Melka Wines, Ravenswood Winery and DuMol.
They are also currently offering delivery within the city of San Francisco (free with purchases of $150 or more; $25 with purchases under $150). Or take advantage of their curbside delivery service with the Embarcadero Valet (call ahead 415-391-9400). Wine purchases may also be made on their website, and they ship to all states except Massachusetts and Utah.
Add to this wine classes, a comprehensive website, and a wine club, and you can see how the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant really can be your one-stop-shop for wine-buying, tasting and exploring.
