After the invasion of reality TV, everyone assumed that quality creative scripted series were all but dead. The basic cable networks have stepped up over the years with a lot of great new shows, as well as some duds. This time around TNT has been invaded with an all-new alien invasion series called Falling Skies. This high profile series produced by Steven Spielberg has had a media promotion giant behind it building up to it’s premiere, but is it worth it?
The premise of this series is nothing real original, but somewhat unique to TV. Basically the earth has been invaded and the lone survivors are fighting to survive and take the world back. This is basically the same story as AMC’s brilliant Walking Dead, but with aliens instead of zombies. In a creative way, they tell this story with an opening of kid’s drawings while telling the back-story. This was a cool intro, but the kid they used mumbled when he talked, therefore making it hard to understand anything he was saying. Luckily it was easy to figure out what is going on. The story has the potential of being really good if well executed. So far with the first two hours it was pretty slow moving and struggled to really get going. The acting was fine and everyone seemed to play their parts fine, but without any real standout performances. This is one of those casts that although decent, could really have been played by just about anyone. Noah Wylie steps up as the lead in this show and really shows his ability to carry a show on his own, while also being somewhat of an action hero, but at the same time really never shows anything real special. The effects are really done well here, with some nicely designed aliens. Unlike most shows that are effect driven, usually the early episodes typically have lame effects, but not here. Clearly they wasted no expense on the aliens and their designs. These blended really well with the rest of this world and the battles came off pretty cool to look at. Sadly they are few and far between in these early episodes.
These first two episodes came off a bit slow and lacked a lot of excitement, but have the potential to be a really good show if done correct. The issue here is that if they only focus on the characters lives and never their struggle this will go downhill fast. Don’t misunderstand, their struggle to live is also important to the series, but to keep most of the sci-fi fans interested, they have to give them enough sci-fi to care. Only time will tell if this invasion will continue. Check out the show Sunday’s on TNT.
