Whether you haven’t made it to the State Fair in Sacramento yet or you just can’t get enough, take some inspiration from the radical fair food to concoct equally absurd and fun dishes at home. Like the fair, this over-the-top style of food should probably only occur once a year — but enjoy it while it’s here, because it is practically an experience in itself. Make this Ultimate Chocolate Brownie Dessert and see for yourself.
First organized in the mid-19th century as an agricultural exposition to advertise the state’s prosperous farmland, the California State Fair has thus, since its inception, been largely about food. Originally featuring agricultural competition for entertainment, including the size of crops such as carrots or peanuts, the food at the fair has certainly evolved in a century and a half. This event encourages pushing everything to the limits of the extreme, and this Ultimate Chocolate Brownie Dessert absolutely satisfies that requirement. (See this link for further information on attending the California State Fair before it ends on July 31st.)
As far as the current fair food goes, you can find (or arguably subject yourself to) some of the most peculiar inventions of the mind and stomach. Sure, you can feast on the standard corn dogs and funnel cake, but the state fair has expanded to include mind-boggling treats like maple bacon sundaes, alligator dishes and cooked scorpions. This Ultimate Chocolate Brownie Dessert is not nearly as exotic as edible insects, but it is nothing to scoff at either — however, it does have more recognizable ingredients. Even more, the fixings of this extreme brownie delight are easy to find; as always, look for the best bargain (such as the 3-for-$1 special on cracker jacks at Safeway.)
Go overboard with a fudgy brownie, caramel sauce, cracker jacks and vanilla ice cream in this Ultimate Chocolate Brownie Dessert– just don’t forget a napkin and your sweet tooth! Your inner child thanks you.
- 1 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup flour
- 3/4 cup butter, melted
- 1 (4-oz) bar semisweet chocolate, melted
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 tsp sat
- 1 pint vanilla bean or French vanilla ice cream
- 3 boxes cracker jacks
- 1 bottle prepared caramel sauce
Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees. Add the sugar, flour, eggs, cocoa powder, vanilla and salt into a large bowl. Next, add the melted butter and chocolate to the mix, and combine with an electric mixer. Pour into a greased and floured 7″x11″ baking dish. Bake for 25-30 minutes.
Once the brownies have cooled enough to handle, slice and remove from pan. Assemble the Ultimate Chocolate Brownie Dessert by placing a brownie in a dish or wide-lipped bowl. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream atop the brownie. Drizzle with caramel sauce, sprinkle with cracker jacks and dig in.
