It tends to happen in stories of this nature that two sets of people on the same quest meet up at some point. So it was when Prince Pompadore and Kabumpo the Elegant Elephant encountered Wag the Rabbit and Peg Amy the Wooden Doll.
They didn’t hit it off right away; Kabumpo laughed at Peg’s appearance, earning him the enmity of her devoted companion Wag. But soon Pompa and Peg were good friends and the quartet continued on their way to rescue Ozma and the rest trapped in the palace on Ruggedo’s head.
As for those trapped, they lowered a sign in front of the Gnome’s face threatening to drop eggs on him if he didn’t sit still. So he did! While Ozma and the others regrouped, the Sand Man came striding across the clouds. Thinking Ozma’s palace an insubstantial cloud castle, he made to jump through it.
He smacked into the building, dropping his bag of magic sand, instantly sending all the meat people and animals in the palace– and the Gnome under it, though he remained sitting up– to sleep. The Sand Man dashed home to tell his wife of his odd adventure.
The Scarecrow began to plan how to get everyone out of this predicament.
As the rescuers continued their journey, Peg began to think more and more that she had somehow been alive before.
Kabumpo changed his attitude toward Wooden Doll when he realized how kind and considerate she was, and determined that she would return with him and Pompa to Pumperdink. To apologize for his former behavior to her, Kabumpo gave her a pearl necklace.
For her part, Peg Amy had become quite fond of Pompadore.
They realized how useful the items in Glegg’s Magic Box could be to them,if they could only get it open. But it defied all attempts.
The group’s progress was temporarily impeded by the Twigs, walking tree people whose King despised “gormishness,” whatever that is. Kabumpo’s strength got them out of that jam, though Pompa’s face was badly scratched.
Having dealt with walking, talking trees, Our Friends were by no means prepared to deal with a walking, talking country! But here one came, galloping along on ten mountain feet, looking for people to settle it, and scooped up the quartet onto its surface.
Peg Amy stood on a small hill and, looking into the small lakes that were the Country’s eyes, calmed it down. It explained that it wanted to be an island in the Nonestic Ocean, and declared Peg Amy its Princess.
Despite their rather dire situation, Wag was overjoyed. “I always knew you were a Princess, Peg my dear,” he said.
Charmed by the Wooden Doll, the Runaway Island agreed to take them across the Deadly Desert to Ev to confront the giant. But when they actually came upon the sleeping form of Ruggedo, the Island shook everyone off and took to its heels.
Pompa now had a black eye, but the Magic Box had sprung open!
