This week, our Soap Insider, Tommy Lightfoot Garrett, talks Daytime Emmy wins. In case you missed it, the Daytime Emmys aired last Sunday on Detroit’s local CBS affiliate, WWJ Channel 15.
Examiner: Overall, what did you think of this year’s Emmy show? Did you feel Wayne Brady did a good job as host?
Tommy Lightfoot Garrett: I thought the show was very different. I’m not too quick to complain since we are very lucky that the show was even airing on a network station this year. There was concern initially that neither ABC nor CBS would cover it, and that would have not been a positive thing for the fight we have currently to help Daytime!
I think Wayne Brady was good, not great, but good, adequate for sure. He did the most with what his writers gave him, and aside from a few awkward or cringe worthy moments, Wayne was fine. The show had one major flaw, but again, it’s hard to complain. But the lack of showing any of the soap nominees’ scenes was a bit sad to me. Many people who watch the show but not the soaps themselves often will become a fan if they see a major scene of a nominee or a show’s great clips. ‘Y&R’ is very good about making people want to watch their number one soap by showing a great group of exciting scenes.
Examiner: What was the biggest surprise win for you?
TLG: There were very few really surprise moments, but for me I was both ecstatic and shocked that Michael Park won. I really did think Christian LeBlanc would win again, but how exciting it was to see Michael pull it off again. He’s on stage now, and many of us, especially those of us who know him believe he’d be perfect for a soap. I’d love to see him as Eric Forrester’s bastard son on ‘B&B’ or even a real love interest for Sharon or Phyllis on ‘Y&R!’ The guy has so many great qualities; mainly Michael comes off as believable in every scene he plays. He’s uniquely genuine as an actor, and a person!
Examiner: Biggest surprise loss?
TLG: Susan Flannery! I was excited for Laura Wright, but I think I really wanted Susan to win. Her scenes last year during Stephanie initially learning that she had stage four lung and brain cancer were sublime! She is so solid as a performer, and I’m glad that Laura won, she certainly was deserving, but Susan had this category won in my opinion. Anyhow, hopefully she’ll get another opportunity to be nominated for a solid storyline!
Examiner: Most deserving win? (For me it was Laura Wright).
TLG: Scott Clifton! I think he is so underrated, and he has been given so much rich material over the past 2 years on ‘B&B.’ He’s sensational, he comes across in his role as being believable and he plays it masterfully. Liam was not an easy role to walk into. But Kim Matula and Don Diamont gave him so much red meat to work with, such great acting in his storyline! Adrienne Frantz is also superb.
Examiner: Was there an actor you feel was over looked this year?
TLG: (Michigan’s) Adrienne Frantz and Jeanne Cooper. Jeanne specially carries so much of ‘Y&R’ that it is not fair to have an Emmy show without her being nominated in the Lead Actress category. And as for Leading Men! Steve Burton! He’s always so much fun to watch!
