Dame Elizabeth Taylor was honored last night at the 18th annual amfAR Cinema Against AIDS gala held during the Cannes Film Festival. The gala, which raised $10 million for amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, attracted a star studded guest list and featured a live auction which was dedicated to the memory of Dame Elizabeth Taylor; who was a tireless supporter of amfAR.
From Janet Jackson: “Dame Elizabeth lit the flame, and we must carry the torch in the fight against AIDS” Janet Jackson gave a heartfelt speech during the event as a tribute to the hard work and dedication Elizabeth Taylor gave to amfAR and helping in the in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The live auction included items which were donated in Dame Elizabeth Taylor’s memory. Lots included a limited-edition Herb Ritts photograph of Dame Elizabeth entitled “Elizabeth Taylor, Malibu” which bid up to, and sold for 150,000 euros. There was also a highly sought after Andy Warhol “Liz” lithograph which was signed and dated that sold for 400,000 euros.
The top selling live auction item of the fundraiser was the chance to play tennis with H.S.H. Prince Albert of Monaco. His fiancée Charlene Wittstock took bids on the stage for the lot and added a last minute private swimming lesson to the auction item. The tennis game and private lesson with the former Olympic Swimmer raised 1 million euros. There were two bidders willing to pay 500,000 euros for the lot, so the royal couple took both bidders and offered the auction item to both of the generous guests.
Guests of the event also enjoyed entertainment from a few iconic celebrities. Milla Jovovich took to the stage and sang “I Want to Be Loved by You” followed by a surprise performance by Courtney Love who wowed the audience with two songs. Bebel Gilberto also excited the audience with a performance of “Samba De Bencao” followed by Boy George who closed the event with two songs.
Celebrity guests of the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala included Chairman Kenneth Cole, Janet Jackson, Patrick Dempsey, Milutin Gatsby, Robert De Niro, Sean Penn, Gavin Rossdale, Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele, Ryan Kavanaugh, Karl Lagerfeld, Michel Litvak, Freida Pinto, Carine Roitfeld, Brooke Sheilds, Gwen Stefani, Donatella Versace, Harvey Weinstein and Milla Jovovich.
The after-party included dancing and DJ tunes by celebrities Samantha Ronson, Sebastian Perrin and Michelangelo L’Acqua. The post soiree was sponsored by L’Oreal and hosted by Milla Jovovich, Freida Pinto and Gwen Stefani.
