Last weekend, westside green home tours kicked off a week of events related to the annual Dwell on Design eco-friendly home exhibition at the LA Convention Center. Though there were a few scattered events this week, the full exhibition begins today, Friday June 24 and continues until Sunday June 26. Friday focuses more on the design trade, and Saturday and Sunday are both packed with informational seminars with experts giving tips on green living.
Though it would be nice to simply sum all the speakers and subjects, it’s simply impossible. On Saturday alone, there are 26 seminars on two stages. Luckily, the subjects which are varied enough to provide something for everyone – and most likely, you won’t be interested in every single one. On Saturday, on the Sustainability Stage, some of the highlights are Marketplace: The Sustainable Consumer, as well as DESIGNINGreen with Kathy Ireland and Angelo Surmelis, and Green Living with Mariel Hemingway and Zem Joaquin. On the Design innovation Stage there are more fun options like Dwell Kitchen: Beer Craft and Living in an Airstream. That same stage has two family-centered talks for stylish parents that would like some guidance on their home design: Designing for Family and Design for Kids.
On Sunday there are even more seminars, including special guest, and green superstar, Ed Begley, Jr. Begley will talk about his long commitment and experiences with green living. There will also be talks on cycling in LA(Are Two Wheels Greater than Four?), as well as school gardens and renovations. The Design Innovation Stage has a special focus on Indie design and culture on Sunday, featuring The Business Behind Indie Design, Home Work: How-to Printmaking, Pop Surf Culture, and Meet the Future of Modern Cuisine, among others.
True, all those seminars seem daunting, but most only last 30 minutes, which will quickly send you back into the exhibition hall to scan all the latest and greatest green home products on the market. This year, over 200 brands are participating. You can find anything from indoor, outdoor, kitchen, bath, energy, building materials, furniture and family in one room on one weekend. Plus, there are experts from each company that can help answer your green living questions.
In addition to the exhibition, Japanese artist SASAKI will be performing his Heartbeat Drawing Project to raise money for the earthquake victims in Japan. SASAKI actually paints each donor’s heartbeat with an airbrush, live, as he listens to it. It’s a very unique and personal way to lend support to those in need. He’s drawn over 20 million heartbeats as of this writing.
