Just because we’re a little “ocean deprived” doesn’t mean we can’t have a beach party. Gypsy flamenco icons (and self-professed “sons of the beach”) Willie and Lobo bring their electrifying brand of music to Tucson on Saturday, May 7 as part of Rhythm & Roots outstanding Plaza Palomino Courtyard Concert Series.
The fun-loving, freewheeling pair of adventurers emerged during the first wave of Nuevo Flamenco in the ‘90s, though their music explores a much broader palette. Playing a hypnotic blend of gypsy, flamenco, Middle Eastern, hot jazz, Cuban swing and tango, the dynamic duo incredibly manages to sound “big” with only a violin and Spanish guitar.
Willie and Lobo’s infectious music is a marvel of emotion and passion – along with a little unadulterated hilarity thrown in. Their dynamic shows are the embodiment of “Zambra” – the Gypsy word for, “a gathering of musical merriment” – and the title of their most recent album.
When not touring or recording, the two “rockin’ surfin’ gypsy dudes” are likely to be found hangin’ ten near their homes, Willie on the West Coast of Florida and Lobo on the Mexican coast. In fact, four years ago they ceased touring, preferring the beach life of their seaside homes.
The Old Pueblo is fortunate to be catchin’ a wave with the twosome as part of their reunion tour. Expect an evening of musical exotica as the world wise gypsies draw on influences from every corner of the globe.
Tickets are $27 advance, $30 at the door. Advance tickets for Plaza Palomino shows can be purchased at Antigone Books – 411 N. 4th Ave, all Bookmans locations, Grey Dog Trading Company in Plaza Palomino, online at www.rhythmandroots.org, and toll-free at 800-594-8499.
