The cries for change are global. People from around the world are seeing what’s going on with our American wild horses, and are screaming for it to stop.
If you are one of those people who think that somebody else will take care of it and your voice isn’t necessary, you couldn’t be more wrong. Every single voice is needed now before it’s too late, and the herds of wild horses have been completely wiped out.
Our great country was built on the backs of the ancestors of these horses. They were the transportation for humans long before automobiles came along. They plowed the fields, carried the mail, and pulled the covered wagons to get people out to the west. They have been fiercely loyal, dedicated and true to the humans on this continent. Now, they need your help for their very survival.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) continues their relentless roundups of the wild herds, using skewed numbers and warped reasoning to justify it. This heartless assault on our wild horses has continued unchecked for decades, and has reached the critical point now that herds are being decimated in numbers that they can never recover from. Those small few that are allowed to remain have been sterilized so they can’t procreate.
Why is all of this going on? One word: Greed. Cattle ranchers can graze their cattle cheaply on this Federal land that is paid for by your tax dollars. Natural gas and other natural resources lie under the ground where the wild hooves run, so the greedy want to take it over. It’s not for any rational reasons other than pure, unadulterated greed. These American icons have lived in peace and harmony with nature for centuries and yet suddenly now they are considered “pests”. It’s claimed they wipe out the natural vegetation, but nothing could be further from the truth. They eat selectively. They move from place to place.
Aside from the brutal and cruel gathers, which in and of themselves should be considered criminal, there have been attempts to build fences in some regions to keep them from being able to get to their natural water supplies, which is a slow death sentence for them. The sterilization techniques used last for years, eliminating any possibility of the herds being able to rebuild their numbers. Old and infirm horses are left alone occasionally, but the young, vibrant stallions, mares and foals are taken.
It’s reached the critical point where if it isn’t stopped now, it will be too late. Do you want your grandchildren to only know about the wild horses through books and movies because the wild herds have been wiped out? Are you part of the population that actually believes the false statistics from the BLM, or have bought into the fallacy that these horses are a problem? Are you of the opinion that you don’t need to speak out, because others will do it and there’s no need? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are part of the problem.
The time is now for everyone, but most especially every single United States citizen, whether an animal advocate or not, to speak up and demand that these roundups/gathers end and end now. Don’t allow another innocent foal or pregnant mare to die. Don’t allow another stallion who is trying to protect his family suffer a broken neck and die a slow death. Don’t allow another family band to be ripped apart, shoved into trailers and crammed into holding facilities. Don’t allow another single American wild horse to end up at an auction, to be purchased by a “kill buyer” and then be taken to Canada or Mexico to be brutally slaughtered.
It’s up to you. Each and every single one of you. Not your neighbors. Not your friends. Not the “tree huggers”. Not “somebody else”. You and you alone.
The video that is provided with this article will show you a composite of the nightmare our wild horses endure during a gather. At approximately 1:37 minutes into the video, you will see a tiny foal, down and covered in mud. Because of the brutality of the stampede and his desperate attempt to keep up with his mother, this baby died. This is murder; the murder of an innocent being who never had a chance at life. The other injuries you will see are just as horrendous. This is typical for these gathers. These are not the exceptions, but rather the rule when it comes to the roundups.
Pregnant mares abort their unborn babies, tiny foals have their soft hooves literally fall off and they die in agony, stallions break their necks while fighting to protect their families, terrified horses slam into the fences of the chutes and are critically injured; all of it the price our wild horses are paying for human greed. Whether you’re an animal advocate or not, watching this video will break your heart. No animal deserves this.
This atrocity is being paid for with your tax dollars. Please don’t allow our wild horses to become nothing more than a memory.
Linked below is the Animal Legal Defense Fund page to add your voice. Just a few fill-in-the-blank answers and your letter will be sent to all of your government representatives, asking that the summer gathers be halted.
Links to detailed information about these horrendous gathers of our wild horses, and the ones planned for the summer (with record high temperatures predicted) are provided below. If you aren’t familiar with the dire situation of our wild horses, I urge you to read the information. Once you see it, you’ll understand that this is not just another problem for animals, but instead is a true crisis that needs to end.
Please don’t turn away. Our wild horses need your help for their very survival.
Blessings to you all.
