Washington Park, Denver – No plans this Saturday morning? Love animals and want to support them but not sure how to begin? Need motivation to get out of bed and enjoy this wonderful Colorado weather?
Then grab your sneakers and your furry companion and head down to Wash Park for the 18th Annual Furry Scurry! The Furry Scurry is a two-mile walk that raises funds for the Dumb Friends League. The Dumb Friends League is a local Denver animal shelter that takes in over 25,000 homeless animals every year. On average, it costs the Dumb Friends League $20,030.00 per DAY to pay for the direct care of these homeless animals. 100% of the money raised at the Furry Scurry will go towards providing care for these animals. It is the Dumb Friends League’s biggest fundraiser and last year they had over 6,500 participants register and raised over $1 MILLION dollars!
If you are an animal lover, than this is definitely an opportunity to meet thousands of others that share your passion!
You can register online at www.furryscurry.org or in person at the Dumb Friends League’s Quebec Street shelter in Denver or at the Buddy Center in Castle Rock. The registration fee is $50.00, with every penny going towards the animals in their care. You can also register the morning of the walk between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. The walk officially kicks off at 9:00 a.m. Be sure to mention at the registration table if your dog was adopted from the Dumb Friends League to receive an alum ribbon for your pooch to proudly display during the walk!
No dog? No big deal! You don’t have to own or bring a dog to participate. There are plenty of cat, rabbit, gerbil and bird lovers walking in honor of their critters at home. Every pet deserves a second chance at forever homes, and the Dumb Friends League does not discriminate!
This is a family friendly event with plenty of activities going on throughout the day to keep even the shortest of attention spans entertained. There is a “flealess” market with over 130 vendors and local businesses. Be on the lookout for all the freebies being given away! You can also enter you and your dog in the Pet/Person Look-Alike Contest, as well as the Best Pet Kiss, Best Tail Wagger and Best Trick contests. There will also be demonstrations by the Colorado Disc Dogs and Ruff Flyball groups. These events all begin at 9:45 a.m. There will also be refreshments, food and live music to enjoy. And if you are looking for a new family pet, stop by the ‘meet and greet’ tent to visit with adoption counselors and dogs ready for new homes between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and noon.
If you plan on bringing Fido with you, please note the Dumb Friends League’s guidelines:
– only one dog per person;
– all dogs must be on a 6-ft or shorter, non-retractable leash;
– ID tags and current vaccination tags must be present;
– spay/neutered dogs over the age of 6-months old; and
– bring your own bags and please pick up after your dog!
This will be my third year participating in the Furry Scurry and I simply love it! The park is filled with the positive vibes of animal lovers collectively working towards raising funds and awareness for the care of homeless pets. The Dumb Friends League really is a great organization that not only strives to provide shelter for thousands of animals, but also continues to be an educational leader in the community with spay/neuter mobiles and behavior programs open to the public. They receive animal transfers from neighboring states due to puppy mills and hoarding cases and have their own animal cruelty investigators working toward the protection of local animals. The Dumb Friends League is all about providing second chances, and that is something everyone can appreciate!
