Being single again after five, ten, perhaps twenty years of marriage can present some dating challenges. Finding stimulating “singles” social events in Houston is an adventure, but I am hoping that my next series of columns wiill assist Houston Divorced Singles with this dilemma.
My first three ideas stem from places I’ve visited in the art and film community. Over the next few weeks I will present various social, non-traditional Houston venues where you can mix and mingle without wearing a sign that says, “Divorced and Single.” These are not “singles” events, but rather, entertaining avenues for you to consider when stepping back into the dating world. The idea is to have fun and hopefully meet someone interesting. At worst, with the following suggestions, you will be guaranteed to enjoy yourself and find inspiration within a more mature (but never dull) art community.
Mixers & Elixirs: Located in The Houston Museum of Natural Science at 5555 Hermann Park Drive, Houston, TX 77030. For several summers this popular mixing event has been offered to Houstonians every Friday from 7pm-10pm. Sadly, Summer 2011 will be your last chance to see for yourself what all the talk is about. With live entertainment from popular bands such as “Molly & The Ringwalds” and “Radio London”, you can enjoy appetizers while surrounded by ancient artifacts and stimulating conversation with a more mature, educated crowd. Enjoy this while it lasts! Remaining consecutive Fridays will be July 8th through August 26th. Admission is $15 for non-members. For more information visit www.hmns.org.
International Decor Gallery/Hannah Bacol-Bush Gallery: Located at 2501 South Shepherd Drive, Houston, TX 77019.
Besides traditional art exhibits, this up and coming gallery offers a range of entertaining social activities. Ms. Bacol-Bush keeps things entertaining with interesting guest speakers and art classes which include wine and appetizers all while surrounded by beautiful art and sculptures in a relaxing atmosphere in the heart of Houston. Find your inner artist while mingling with other art-enthusiasts! For more information visit www.internationaldecorgallery.com.
Landmark River Oaks Theatre: Located at 2009 West Gray, Houston, TX 77019. Bring a friend and enjoy a film in this dynamic Houston landmark. If you enjoy a cocktail before, during, or after a movie, the upstairs bar offers a dimly lit, rarely crowded lounge where you can relax and enjoy conversation with a friend or perhaps someone new. The River Oaks Theatre often supports the independent film community with screenings and premieres of original local and national independent films. Take a walk on the red carpet for yourself! Most screenings are open to the public. Tickets for independent film screenings are usually purchased at sites linked to Land Mark Theatres so be sure to call for this information at 713-524-2175.
