In what would be a sad and unprecedented occurrence, sources on the set of American Idol were worried this afternoon that Lauren Alaina would be unable to sing in tonight’s finale. TMZ is reporting that Alaina has lost her voice, and was not been able to perform all of her songs during this afternoon’s rehearsal. TMZ’s spies on the set say that Alaina’s doctors have told her she should not speak or sing right now, and that there was a possibility she cannot perform tonight.
American Idol is already on a shortened schedule this week to make way for the So You Think You Can Dance premiere on Thursday night. The finalists have been working non-stop all season and have been preparing three songs for tonight’s performance, in addition to prepping for Wednesday’s finale show. The timing obviously could not be worse for Lauren, who was thrilled to make it through to this season’s finale.
It is hard to imagine that Lauren would actually drop out of the competition, but if she could perform, it certainly did not make sense to have her sing. Producers were said to be scrambling to find Haley Reinhart, who was eliminated from the Top 3 last week. If Reinhart were to be brought in to sing, it would certainly put her at a major disadvantage, as she has had no time to prepare to sing tonight. While McCreery has been favored to win all season, this could have put him at an extreme advantage.
Do you think it’s possible Lauren would drop out of the competition? What would you do in her situation? Do you think Haley has any shot at all of winning if she were to jump in at the last minute? Tune in to American Idol tonight on Fox, Channel 10 in the Scottsdale area, to see how it all falls into place.
Update: TMZ now reports that Lauren is getting hair and make-up done silently, as the doctor has frozen her throat in an effort to let her perform tonight. Haley is in wardrobe preparing in case she needs to perform. If she does, she will sing “House of the Rising Sun,” “I Who Have Nothing” and “Bennie and the Jets.” More updates to come…
Lauren is performing, despite what sources say is a blown vocal cord. She says, “I’m here. I’m ready to sing … don’t worry about it.”
