The Dhanwantari Yoga Center is a great resource for yoga classes, healing sessions, workshops, and lectures for anyone interested in bringing balance to their lives. Originally opening in June 2007 on South Michigan St. in downtown South Bend, Dhanwantari’s mission was to promote healing, and offer “a space that helps you feel better, body, mind, and soul.” In 2010, Brooke Cannoot, Dhanwantari’s founder, moved the center to the Remedy Building on Washington St., still in downtown South Bend. Classes are held either Shiva (upstairs) or Shakti (downstairs).
Yoga means “union” and helps to unite the different spheres of ourselves: masculine/feminine, everyday/meditative, etc. The practice of yoga is sometimes misunderstood as primarily a physical practice, but it is a mental game as well. Brooke Cannoot, when referring to yoga, said, “When we open the mind and the body to the practice of yoga, life FLOWS.” It is through the practice of yoga that we learn how to truly live in the moment.
Focusing on the breath is essential in the practice of yoga. As with the Smiling Meditation, a focus on the breath helps us to stay in the moment and promotes healing and living in balance. In our daily lives, we often take our breathing for granted, so in a yoga practice, the focus on the breath is very grounding and brings us back to what is truly important.
Dhanwantari has fostered a wonderful community of teachers, students, healers, and seekers. The supportive environment attracts teachers who are skilled, but do not present themselves as being “higher” than anyone who comes to the practice. The teachers are better known as guides, (and they truly are) for in each session, they take the time to describe and perform the poses, and then help to guide an individual to find the pose that will work best for their body in that moment. Practicing yoga is not about achieving “the perfect pose”, but it teaches you to tune in to your own body’s signals and abilities and adjust the pose to your needs.
