In what was certainly no surprise to viewers, Superbowl MVP Hines Ward is the Season 12 Dancing with the Stars MirrorBall trophy winner. Voters helped Kirstey Alley overcome the 5 point gap between her and Chelsea Kane, landing her firmly in second place. The three finalists are appearing live on Good Morning America this morning to perform one last dance for fans. Newark, NJ fans can shoot on over to Times Square in New York to watch them in person, or on Channel 7 WABC-TV between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.
The 2 hour finale extravaganza saw the return of all the Season 12 winners and all except Wendy Williams took to the ballroom floor for a finale performance with their pro partners. Wendy opted for an awkward talk show segment in which she pretended to interview herself. Mike Catherwood did a hilarious sketch in which he auditioned for a spot in the Troupe’s dance group, outfitted in a camouflage leotard and pink knee socks. In more suitable attire, he then performed a dance number with the Troupe and partner Lacey Schwimmer, who stripped him down to his leotard for their finale moment. “Words fail me” said host Tom Bergeron after the number. Kendra Wilkinson reprised her shimmy and shake samba number, only to hit her head on a dancer’s elbow during her fallback from the judges’ table. Partner Louis Van Amstel tweeted soon after that she was just fine.
The eagerly awaited Design a Dance was a jive performed by contest winners Maks Chmerkovskiy, Lacey, Chelsie Hightower and Cheryl Burke. The winning concept had Maks dressed as a policeman scolding the three “school girls” for dancing in the streets, set to a live performance of The Go Gos singing their 1982 hit “We Got the Beat.”
Other highlights included a segment of judges’ comments throughout the season “remixed” to clips of dances and rehearsals, and a mini dance off between Chris Jericho and Sugar Ray Leonard.
Before the results, the 3 finalists danced one last time for the judges. Hines performed his samba from week 3, Kirstie chose her week 1 cha cha, and Chelsea reprised her week 4 Viennesse or Wizard’s Waltz as she and partner Mark Ballas call it. The judges gave each couple three 10s, (not wanting to be hated or faulted for the outcome?) It was Kirstie’s first and last 10s of the season.
Here are the final scores for the Dancing with the Stars Season 12 Finale:
- Hines & Kym 89
- Kirstie & Maks 84
- Chelsea Kane and Mark 89
And that’s the end of the Season 12 competition. How do you feel about the results?
