Orlando, Fla. – Expert testimony continued Thursday at the Casey Anthony trial, including the return of crime scene investigator Jennifer Welch who conceded Caylee was dumped in an area full of garbage, similar to a trash dump.
Prior to Welch taking the stand, the third defense witness of the day was Robin Maynard, a CSI for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, who testified a heart shaped sticker was found about 45 feet from Caylee’s skull.
Ronald Murdock, an Orange County Sheriff’s Office forensics supervisor, was the next witness, who told the jury the heart shaped sticker was found about 30 feet from Caylee’s skeletal remains.
CSI Jennifer Welch returned to the stand once again and testified that 300 pieces of trash were collected at the crime scene.
Under cross-examination, prosecutor Linda Drane-Burdick asked her, “Investigator Welch, would it be fair to characterize the area where Caylee Marie Anthony’s remains were discarded as a trash dump?”
Welch answered, “Yes, that’s what I would classify it as.”
The powerful exchange made the implication Casey threw her daughter away like a piece of garbage, which may strongly impact the jury.

Lorie Gottesman, an FBI supervisory document examiner, took the stand next, saying she tested three pieces of duct tape found at the crime scene. She admitted that her DNA was inadvertently left on the tape as she was conducting her examination.
Defense attorney Jose Baez asked her, “Can you recall a situation where you believe you might have contaminated the duct tape?”
Gottesman replied, “No, I have no idea how it happened.”
The last defense witness of the day was Cary Oien, a hair and fiber analysis expert with the FBI. He examined the shovel Casey borrowed from a neighbor and found hair on a sticker attached to it.
“The hair, based on the size and the limited nature of the hair, it was not suitable for me to compare to a known sample,” he said. “I could not do anything further other than to identify it was a fragment of hair.”

Although the prosecution alleges Casey ruthlessly murdered her daughter, Caylee, 2, the defense alleges the girl accidentally drowned in a backyard pool on July 16, 2008.
During opening statements Baez said Casey’s father, George Anthony, sexually molested her as a young child. Her attorneys say she lied about Caylee’s tragic death and acted normally after the incident due to her dysfunctional upbringing – filled with lies and secrets. In addition, they allege she conspired with George in a carefully planned cover up.
Earlier in the day, they questioned an FBI expert, Heather Seubert, about a paternity test given to Casey’s brother to determine if he was the biological father of of his niece Caylee. The defense alleges Lee, along with his father, sexually abused his sister.
The defense has also requested Vasco Thompson, a convicted kidnapper, be allowed to testify in the case, claiming he and George had contact only a day prior to Caylee being reported missing on June 14, 2008.
