This summer’s strangest combination, yet freshest idea is Cowboys and Aliens. Finally Hollywood taps into a new idea for a film, though the question is whether Cowboys and Aliens lives up to being a good summer blockbuster.
The movie stars Daniel Craig as Jake Lonergan, Harrison Ford as Woodrow Dolarhyde, Paul Dano as Percy Dolarhyde, Sam Rockwell as Doc, and the main cast is rounded out nicely with the beautiful Olivia Wilde holding her own as Ella. A strong cast helps the movie while the directing is sharp and the action sequences entertain to thrilling heights. This is thanks to Jon Favreau, the nifty director of the Iron Man films along with a few others.
The movie begins with a Jake Lonergan waking up in the desert stricken from amnesia. Neither does he know who he is or what he is doing. On his left wrist he finds a bracelet, in which he fails to spring forth from his arm. After a small, yet badass fight Jake takes off towards a town where he quickly becomes acquainted with the preacher and Percy, the wild son of a rich cattle rancher. Soon after his arrival, Jake’s stay is twisted upside down for him to be locked up, which starts the real fun. Not only is he a wanted man, but Percy’s father, Woodrow Dolarhyde, also has business with Jake for stealing his gold.
All hell breaks loose and demons (aliens) start wrecking havoc capturing people. After breaking out of jail, Jake uses his wrist cuff to dispatch an alien ship, noting the only thing to have power to stop the aliens. Quickly the remaining people become obliged to Jake’s ability of use with the weapon and pave the way towards stopping the aliens to regain their missing people.
Cowboys and Aliens does what a typical summer blockbuster doesn’t, create intriguing well rounded characters. Jake Lonergan and Woodrow Dolarhyde entertains with personalities not typically seen in movies and helps create interest into their personal affairs. The relationship Lonergan has with his missing memory, his girlfriend, and Ella sets the troubled man on a path of redemption along with self finding. Dolarhyde’s interests belong with finding his son and recognizing a man who has truly always been him son. Another strong character happens to be Doc, whose wife is taken from him though nothing will stop his will of finding her.
The movie conveys a fresh idea and entertains with the quick pacing and action packed battles. The plot has a few soft spots, though doesn’t affect as strongly as one would think. Cowboys and Aliens is a definite fun time at the movies and worth every penny. Plus who doesn’t want to see James Bond and Indiana Jones fend off aliens? Cowboys & Aliens gets a 3.5 out of 5 stars!
