This weekend, of May 21st, the Colorado Libertarian Party will be having it’s annual convention at the Doubletree Hotel in Westminster starting at 8:30AM, registration at 7:30AM. In addition to the always riveting Business Meeting for registered Libertarians, there will also be a Casino Night from 7PM to Midnight Friday, all open to the general public.
A new head of the Party will be elected, as current Chair David Williams (@BlueCarp) has opted to not seek reelection. There will also be some local municipal election candidates present as well as presentations from local activists.
Many disaffected voters have found the Libertarian platform to align closer to what they know to be the right way for America to “bounce back” after allowing criminal banks to rob them blind, this would be as close as it gets for “orientation” for new members.
Wanting to be treated as an individual, rather than a number, not surprisingly, is becoming more and more appealing to the people that get up and work hard every day, and don’t/won’t ask for ‘bailouts’. People who would rather have the option of simply being left alone at this point.
No matter what 60 Minutes may have to say about “sovereign citizens”, no one owns any other person. Period.
I thought we had settled that a while ago.
So, extrapolated, a government no matter the size or majority, has no right to infringe on the inherent rights of an individual if they have not harmed a person or property. The Constitution attempted to protect that Principle by enumerating specific powers to the Federal infrastructure, and leaving the rest to the States and or the People as per the 10th Amendment, and even making rules restricting the States’ ability to infringe on said Principle called the Bill of Rights.
We hold that all individuals have the right to exercise sole dominion over their own lives, and have the right to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do no forcibly interfere with the equal rights of others to live in whatever manner they choose. -Libertarian Party Platform
The idea of the “American Dream” is nothing short of being able to do what you want. As long as you don’t harm a person or their property.
This is not an abstract Principle to the people you will meet at the Colorado Libertarian Convention 2011. Unlike many you may have met at a Republican or Democrat convention.
The majority view in nearly every poll is, and has been, for “we need a third party”, now notably within the Republican Party.
Yet the only political party that has a platform that upholds Jeffersonian (read: classical liberal) Principles with any sort of ballot access is the Libertarian Party, those in attendance Satuday reject the mainstream current who have decided normal independent people have no voice in the false left/right political paradigm of mob rule that has been constructed around them.
Libertarianism is the cure for your apathy…
Though the individuals found at the Colorado Libertarian Convention, typically don’t take kindly to grouping people, they find common goals and Principles with many others in attendance and come together annually and attempt to find a way out of the crazy riptide of Statism around them.
