River Cats 5, Sky Sox 3
Sunday, May 8
Matt Carson’s leadoff home run to left field in the fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie en route to a River Cats 5-3 Mother’s Day victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at Raley Field on Sunday.
Sacramento added an insurance run in the fifth when Shane Peterson Peterson bunted back to the pitcher and Anthony Recker broke safely to the plate from third base. The River Cats collected five hits in the inning.
Sacramento took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first when Colorado Springs starter Sean White committed a balk with River Cats catcher Josh Donaldson on third base.
White got the early hook lasting only 1.2 innings and walking four on 49 pitches. In all the Sky Sox used five pitchers on the day.
The Sky Sox were energized off of catcher Eliezer Alfonzo’s two-run blast to left field in the top half of the third, but it was short-lived. Sacramento tied the game at 2-2 when Adrian Cardenas hit a ground rule double that hopped the center field wall bringing Matt Carson to the plate.
Wes Timmons led the way for Sacramento in a 13-hit attack. He went 3-for-4 with anRBI and raised his average to .320. Other than third baseman Steve Tolleson, every starter had a least one hit for the River Cats.
Sacramento starter Bobby Cramer pitched well other than the two-run home run he gave up to Alfonzo. He allowed four hits over 4.2 innings while striking out three.
Joe Bateman (2-1) worked 2.0 innings allowing one earned run on two hits in notching the win for the Cats.
Jesus Colome (0-1) was charged with two earned runs on six River Cats hits over his 2.0 innings and took the loss for Colorado Springs.
The major league Giants swept away the Colorado Rockies over the weekend in San Francisco. After taking the first three games of the series from Colorado Springs, the River Cats can do the same with a win over their Triple-A affiliate Sky Sox today at Raley Field.
Sacramento has held their opponents to three runs or less in all of their 11 wins at home so far this season.
