A change to the weather pattern will slowly begin to evolve over the coming weekend. The previous pattern, which featured a propensity for systems to develop over the Central and Southern Plains and work north and east to the Great Lakes, will slowly transition to a faster more zonal (west to east) flow pattern as we head into the weekend. This will favor faster and weaker systems skirting across the northern tier of the Nation. In fact, some of the latest data seems to indicate a pronounced southerly shift to the storm track as we head through the coming week, with high pressure building into the northern tier of states, from Central Canada, by the middle to later portions of next week.
In the short term, high pressure will be over the region today as a weakening system over the lower Great Lakes this morning moves very slowly east today. This weakening trough of low pressure is forecast to be in the vicinity of the Immediate Capital Region by early Saturday morning. This will cause an increase in clouds with the chance for some scattered showers during the day tomorrow. This is forecast to be a fast moving system and precipitation as result of its passage should exit the region by late afternoon and early evening.
Overnight Saturday skies should begin to clear as high pressure takes control of the weather once again. On Mother’s Day, a storm system over the Ohio Valley looks to pass just south of our region during the day. Conditions should be dry for the most part, though some clouds may filter the sunshine from time to time. Temperatures begin a slow moderation through the beginning of the new work week and should be averaging near to slightly above normal for early May. Precipitation should average near normal.
